ततः स ववृधे गर्भॊ महातेजा रविप्रभः यथा सॊमॊ दविजश्रेष्ठ शुक्लपक्षॊदितॊ दिवि ॥ १-४४-१६ ॥

'Then, O best of Brahmanas, the embryo endued with great splendour, began to develop, like the moon in the heavens in the bright fortnight.' ॥ 1-44-16 ॥

tataH sa vavRdhe garbhò mahAtejA raviprabhaH yathA sòmò davijazreSTha zuklapakSòditò divi ॥ 1-44-16 ॥

यथाकालं तु सा बरह्मन परजज्ञे भुजग सवसा कुमारं देवगर्भाभं पितृमातृभयापहम ॥ १-४४-१७ ॥

'And in due time, the sister of the snakes, O Brahmana, gave birth to a son of the splendor of a celestial child, who became the reliever of the fears of his ancestors and maternal relatives.' ॥ 1-44-17 ॥

yathAkAlaM tu sA barahmana parajajJe bhujaga savasA kumAraM devagarbhAbhaM pitRmAtRbhayApahama ॥ 1-44-17 ॥

ववृधे स च तत्रैव नागराजनिवेशने वेदांश चाधिजगे साङ्गान भार्गवाच चयवनात्मजात ॥ १-४४-१८ ॥

'The child grew up there in the house of the king of the snakes. He studied the Vedas and their branches with the ascetic Chyavana, the son of Bhrigu.' ॥ 1-44-18 ॥

vavRdhe sa ca tatraiva nAgarAjanivezane vedAMza cAdhijage sAGgAna bhArgavAca cayavanAtmajAta ॥ 1-44-18 ॥

चरितव्रतॊ बाल एव बुद्धिसत्त्वगुणान्वितः नाम चास्याभवत खयातं लॊकेष्व आस्तीक इत्य उत ॥ १-४४-१९ ॥

'Despite being a young boy, Astika was unwavering in his vows, displaying great intelligence and possessing various virtues, knowledge, and a detachment from worldly pleasures. He became renowned by the name Astika.' ॥ 1-44-19 ॥

caritavratò bAla eva buddhisattvaguNAnvitaH nAma cAsyAbhavata khayAtaM lòkeSva AstIka itya uta ॥ 1-44-19 ॥

अस्तीत्य उक्त्वा गतॊ यस्मात पिता गर्भस्थम एव तम वनं तस्माद इदं तस्य नामास्तीकेति विश्रुतम ॥ १-४४-२० ॥

'And he was known by the name of Astika (whoever is) because his father had gone to the woods, saying. 'There is' when he was in the womb.' ॥ 1-44-20 ॥

astItya uktvA gatò yasmAta pitA garbhasthama eva tama vanaM tasmAda idaM tasya nAmAstIketi vizrutama ॥ 1-44-20 ॥
