अथ वा य उपाध्यायः करतौ तस्मिन भविष्यति सर्पसत्र विधानज्ञॊ राजकार्यहिते रतः ।। १-३३-१६ ।।

sanskrit

'Or, let one of the snakes, approaching, bite the person who, intending the monarch's good, and well-acquainted with the rites of the snake-sacrifice, may be appointed as the sacrificial priest, so that he will die.' ।। 1-33-16 ।।

english translation

atha vA ya upAdhyAyaH karatau tasmina bhaviSyati sarpasatra vidhAnajJò rAjakAryahite rataH || 1-33-16 ||

'The sacrificial priest dying, the sacrifice will not be completed. We will also bite all those who, are acquainted with the rites of the snake-sacrifice.' ।। 1-33-17 ।।

taM gatvA dazatAM kaza cida bhujagaH sa mariSyati tasmina hate yajJakare karatuH sa na bhaviSyati || 1-33-17 ||

'Other snakes, more virtuous and kind, said, 'O, this counsel of yours is evil. It is not meant to kill Brahmanas. In danger, that remedy is proper, which is blessed on the practices of the righteous.' ।। 1-33-18 ।।

ye cAnye sarpasatrajJA bhaviSyantya asya RtvijaH tAMza ca sarvAna daziSyAmaH kRtama evaM bhaviSyati || 1-33-18 ||

'Among them, certain wise serpents advised, 'This act of killing the Brahmin is not befitting for us; it lacks wisdom.' ।। 1-33-19 ।।

samyaka sada dharmamUlA hi vayasane zAntira uttamA adharmòttaratA nAma kRtsnaM vayApAdayeja jagata || 1-33-20 ||
