ततस ते पार्थिवश्रेष्ठ पूज्यमानाः सदा तवया परकृतीनाम अनुमते पदे सथास्यन्ति पैतृके ॥ १-१९६-११ ॥
'This, O monarch of Bharata's lineage, is what I believe should be your conduct towards the Pandavas, who are to you as your own sons.' ॥ 1-196-11 ॥
english translation
tatasa te pArthivazreSTha pUjyamAnAH sadA tavayA parakRtInAma anumate pade sathAsyanti paitRke ॥ 1-196-11 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptएवं तव महाराज तेषु पुत्रेषु चैव ह वृत्तम औपयिकं मन्ये भीष्मेण सह भारत ॥ १-१९६-१२ ॥
'Thus, O great king, regarding those sons of yours as well, I consider this to be merely an incidental occurrence, O Descendant of Bharata, Along with Bhishma.' ॥ 1-196-12 ॥
english translation
evaM tava mahArAja teSu putreSu caiva ha vRttama aupayikaM manye bhISmeNa saha bhArata ॥ 1-196-12 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscript[कर्ण] यॊजिताव अर्थमानाभ्यां सर्वकार्येष्व अनन्तरौ न मन्त्रयेतां तवच छरेयः किम अद्भुततरं ततः ॥ १-१९६-१३ ॥
'Vaisampayana continued, 'After Drona had finished speaking, Karna spoke next, saying, 'Both Bhishma and Drona have been generously rewarded with wealth and favors bestowed by you!' ॥ 1-196-13 ॥

[karNa] yòjitAva arthamAnAbhyAM sarvakAryeSva anantarau na mantrayetAM tavaca chareyaH kima adbhutataraM tataH ॥ 1-196-13 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptदुष्टेन मनसा यॊ वै परच्छन्नेनान्तर आत्मना बरूयान निःश्रेयसं नाम कथं कुर्यात सतां मतम ॥ १-१९६-१४ ॥
'They are also always considered by you as your trusted friends! What, then, could be more ironic than them giving you advice that is not in your best interest?' ॥ 1-196-14 ॥

duSTena manasA yò vai paracchannenAntara AtmanA barUyAna niHzreyasaM nAma kathaM kuryAta satAM matama ॥ 1-196-14 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptन मित्राण्य अर्थकृच्छ्रेषु शरेयसे वेतराय वा विधिपूर्वं हि सर्वस्य दुःखं वा यदि वा सुखम ॥ १-१९६-१५ ॥
'How can the wise approve advice that is deemed good by someone with wicked intentions, albeit hiding the malice in their heart? Indeed, in times of distress, friends can neither bring benefit nor harm.' ॥ 1-196-15 ॥

na mitrANya arthakRcchreSu zareyase vetarAya vA vidhipUrvaM hi sarvasya duHkhaM vA yadi vA sukhama ॥ 1-196-15 ॥
