[वयास] अस्मिन धर्मे विप्रलम्भे लॊकवेद विरॊधके यस्य यस्य मतं यद यच छरॊतुम इच्छामि तस्य तत ॥ १-१८८-६ ॥

'Hearing these words, Vyasa replied, "O king, this practice, being opposed to both usage and the Vedas, has become obsolete. However, I am interested in hearing the opinion of each of you on this matter."' ॥ 1-188-6 ॥

english translation

[vayAsa] asmina dharme vipralambhe lòkaveda viròdhake yasya yasya mataM yada yaca charòtuma icchAmi tasya tata ॥ 1-188-6 ॥

[दरुपद] अधर्मॊ ऽयं मम मतॊ विरुद्धॊ लॊकवेदयॊः न हय एका विद्यते पत्नी बहूनां दविजसत्तम ॥ १-१८८-७ ॥

'Upon hearing the words of the Rishi, Drupada responded first, saying, "In my opinion, this practice is sinful as it goes against both tradition and the Vedas. O best of Brahmins, I have never seen one woman being married to many men."' ॥ 1-188-7 ॥

[darupada] adharmò 'yaM mama matò viruddhò lòkavedayòH na haya ekA vidyate patnI bahUnAM davijasattama ॥ 1-188-7 ॥

न चाप्य आचरितः पूर्वैर अयं धर्मॊ महात्मभिः न च धर्मॊ ऽपय अनेकस्थश चरितव्यः सनातनः ॥ १-१८८-८ ॥

'Even the illustrious ones of ancient times did not follow such a custom. The wise should never engage in sinful acts.' ॥ 1-188-8 ॥

na cApya AcaritaH pUrvaira ayaM dharmò mahAtmabhiH na ca dharmò 'paya anekasthaza caritavyaH sanAtanaH ॥ 1-188-8 ॥

अतॊ नाहं करॊम्य एवं वयवसायं करियां परति धर्मसंदेह संदिग्धं परतिभाति हि माम इदम ॥ १-१८८-९ ॥

'Therefore, I cannot bring myself to accept this. This practice always appears to me to be of dubious morality.' ॥ 1-188-9 ॥

atò nAhaM karòmya evaM vayavasAyaM kariyAM parati dharmasaMdeha saMdigdhaM paratibhAti hi mAma idama ॥ 1-188-9 ॥

[धृ] यवीयसः कथं भार्यां जयेष्ठॊ भराता दविजर्षभ बरह्मन समभिवर्तेत सद्वृत्तः संस तपॊधन ॥ १-१८८-१० ॥

'After Drupada had finished speaking, Dhrishtadyumna spoke, saying, "O bull among Brahmanas, O ascetic sage, how can the elder brother, if he is of noble disposition, approach the wife of his younger brother?"' ॥ 1-188-10 ॥

[dhR] yavIyasaH kathaM bhAryAM jayeSThò bharAtA davijarSabha barahmana samabhivarteta sadvRttaH saMsa tapòdhana ॥ 1-188-10 ॥
