ततः पुत्रसहस्रं तु कद्रूर जिह्मं चिकीर्षती आज्ञापयाम आस तदा वाला भूत्वाञ्जन परभाः ॥ १-१८-६ ॥
'And Kadru bent upon practicing a deception, ordered her thousand sons to transform themselves into black hair and speedily cover the horse's tail so that she might not become a slave.' ॥ 1-18-6 ॥
english translation
आविशध्वं हयं कषिप्रं दासी न सयाम अहं यथा तद वाक्यं नान्वपद्यन्त ताञ शशाप भुजंगमान ॥ १-१८-७ ॥
'Hurry and bite the sacrificial horse, Kashyapa. I am not able to bear the status of a handmaiden. When they did not comply with her command, she cursed them to become snakes.' ॥ 1-18-7 ॥

सर्पसत्रे वर्तमाने पावकॊ वः परधक्ष्यति जनमेजयस्य राजर्षेः पाण्डवेयस्य धीमतः ॥ १-१८-८ ॥
'She cursed them, saying, 'During the snake-sacrifice of the wise king Janamejaya of the Pandava race, Agni shall consume you all.' ॥ 1-18-8 ॥

शापम एनं तु शुश्राव सवयम एव पितामहः अतिक्रूरं समुद्दिष्टं कद्र्वा दैवाद अतीव हि ॥ १-१८-९ ॥
'And the Grandsire (Brahman) himself heard this exceedingly cruel curse pronounced by Kadru, impelled by the fates.' ॥ 1-18-9 ॥

सार्धं देवगणैः सर्वैर वाचं ताम अन्वमॊदत बहुत्वं परेक्ष्य सर्पाणां परजानां हितकाम्यया ॥ १-१८-१० ॥
'And the Grandsire (Brahman) himself heard this exceedingly cruel curse pronounced by Kadru, impelled by the fates. And seeing that the snakes had multiplied exceedingly, the Grandsire, moved by kind consideration for his creatures, sanctioned with all the gods this curse of Kadru.' ॥ 1-18-10 ॥
