ततः परतिनिवृत्तः स तया वध्वा सहानघ कल्माषपादम आसीनं ददर्श विजने वने ॥ १-१६७-१६ ॥

'Accompanied by his blameless daughter-in-law, the sage then retraced his steps to his hermitage. And one day, amidst the solitary woods, the sage beheld Kalmashapada.' ॥ 1-167-16 ॥

tataH paratinivRttaH sa tayA vadhvA sahAnagha kalmASapAdama AsInaM dadarza vijane vane ॥ 1-167-16 ॥

स तु दृष्ट्वैव तं राजा करुद्ध उत्थाय भारत आविष्टॊ रक्षसॊग्रेण इयेषात्तुं ततः सम तम ॥ १-१६७-१७ ॥

'As the king, O Bharata, beheld the Rishi, consumed by the fierce Rakshasa, anger surged within him, and he rose, eager to consume him.' ॥ 1-167-17 ॥

sa tu dRSTvaiva taM rAjA karuddha utthAya bhArata AviSTò rakSasògreNa iyeSAttuM tataH sama tama ॥ 1-167-17 ॥

अदृश्यन्ती तु तं दृष्ट्वा करूरकर्माणम अग्रतः भयसंविग्नया वाचा वसिष्ठम इदम अब्रवीत ॥ १-१६७-१८ ॥

'Adrisyanti, seeing the cruel Rakshasa approaching like Death himself with his menacing club, addressed Vasishtha with anxious words, filled with fear.' ॥ 1-167-18 ॥

असौ मृत्युर इवॊग्रेण दण्डेन भगवन्न इतः परगृहीतेन काष्ठेन राक्षसॊ ऽभयेति भीषणः ॥ १-१६७-१९ ॥

'There is no one else on earth, O illustrious one, except you, the foremost among those knowledgeable in the Vedas, capable of restraining him today. Protect me, O revered sage, from this cruel and frightful being. Surely, the Rakshasa is approaching to devour us," pleaded Adrisyanti with great fear.' ॥ 1-167-19 ॥

asau mRtyura ivògreNa daNDena bhagavanna itaH paragRhItena kASThena rAkSasò 'bhayeti bhISaNaH ॥ 1-167-19 ॥

तं निवारयितुं शक्तॊ नान्यॊ ऽसति भुवि कश चन तवदृते ऽदय महाभाग सर्ववेदविदां वर ॥ १-१६७-२० ॥

'No one else on earth, O fortunate one, is capable of restraining him except you. Therefore, O blessed sage, today the duty falls upon you, the best among those versed in all knowledge.' ॥ 1-167-20 ॥

taM nivArayituM zaktò nAnyò 'sati bhuvi kaza cana tavadRte 'daya mahAbhAga sarvavedavidAM vara ॥ 1-167-20 ॥
