[वै] ततॊ दुर्यॊधनॊ राजा सर्वास ताः परकृतीः शनैः अर्थमानप्रदानाभ्यां संजहार सहानुजः ॥ १-१३१-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana narrated, Prince Duryodhana, accompanied by his brothers, commenced winning over the people gradually through generous grants of wealth and honors.' ॥ 1-131-1 ॥

[vai] tatò duryòdhanò rAjA sarvAsa tAH parakRtIH zanaiH arthamAnapradAnAbhyAM saMjahAra sahAnujaH ॥ 1-131-1 ॥

'In the meantime, certain astute counselors, under Dhritarashtra's direction, one day commenced painting a vivid picture of the enchanting city of Varanavata within the court.' ॥ 1-131-2 ॥

dhRtarASTra parayuktAsa tu ke cita kuzalamantriNaH kathayAM cakrire ramyaM nagaraM vAraNAvatama ॥ 1-131-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअयं समाजः सुमहान रमणीयतमॊ भुवि उपस्थितः पशुपतेर नगरे वारणावते ॥ १-१३१-३ ॥
'This assembly is the grandest and most delightful on earth, convened in the city of Varanavata, the abode of Lord Pashupati.' ॥ 1-131-3 ॥

ayaM samAjaH sumahAna ramaNIyatamò bhuvi upasthitaH pazupatera nagare vAraNAvate ॥ 1-131-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसर्वरत्नसमाकीर्णे पुंसां देशे मनॊरमे इत्य एवं धृतराष्ट्रस्य वचनाच चक्रिरे कथाः ॥ १-१३१-४ ॥
'In a land delightful to the heart and strewn with all kinds of gems, such were the stories crafted at the behest of Dhritarashtra.' ॥ 1-131-4 ॥

sarvaratnasamAkIrNe puMsAM deze manòrame itya evaM dhRtarASTrasya vacanAca cakrire kathAH ॥ 1-131-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकथ्यमाने तथा रम्ये नगरे वारणावते गमने पाण्डुपुत्राणां जज्ञे तत्र मतिर नृप ॥ १-१३१-५ ॥
'As the delightful city of Varanavata was thus being described, the king developed the intention for the Pandavas to travel there.' ॥ 1-131-5 ॥
