न हि राज्ञाम उदीर्णानाम एवं भूतैर नरैः कव चित सख्यं भवति मन्दात्मञ शरिया हीनैर धनच्युतैः ॥ १-१२२-३६ ॥

'Indeed, among men of wisdom, friendship is not established in this manner, especially with those who are fallen in status and deprived of wealth, O dull-witted one.' ॥ 1-122-36 ॥

english translation

na hi rAjJAma udIrNAnAma evaM bhUtaira naraiH kava cita sakhyaM bhavati mandAtmaJa zariyA hInaira dhanacyutaiH ॥ 1-122-36 ॥

नाश्रॊत्रियः शरॊत्रियस्य नारथी रथिनः सखा नाराजा पार्थिवस्यापि सखिपूर्वं किम इष्यते ॥ १-१२२-३७ ॥

'If one is not a listener, what desire does he have in the company of one who is a listener? If one is not a benefactor, what will please even a king? Therefore, what desire does he have to be a friend before a king, who is not angered even by one who was once his friend?' ॥ 1-122-37 ॥

nAzròtriyaH zaròtriyasya nArathI rathinaH sakhA nArAjA pArthivasyApi sakhipUrvaM kima iSyate ॥ 1-122-37 ॥

दरुपदेनैवम उक्तॊ ऽहं मन्युनाभिपरिप्लुतः अभ्यागच्छं कुरून भीष्म शिष्यैर अर्थी गुणान्वितैः ॥ १-१२२-३८ ॥

'Having been insulted by Drupada, O Bhishma, I am filled with wrath. I have come to the Kurus seeking intelligent and obedient disciples.' ॥ 1-122-38 ॥

परतिजग्राह तं भीष्मॊ गुरुं पाण्डुसुतैः सह पौत्रान आदाय तान सर्वान वसूनि विविधानि च ॥ १-१२२-३९ ॥

'Bhishma, along with the Pandava sons, then received that teacher and, taking all the grandchildren, together with various gifts, accommodated them.' ॥ 1-122-39 ॥

paratijagrAha taM bhISmò guruM pANDusutaiH saha pautrAna AdAya tAna sarvAna vasUni vividhAni ca ॥ 1-122-39 ॥

'O king, Bhishma formally gave the status of disciples to Drona, according to the rules. And Drona, the great bowman, accepted the Kauravas as his disciples.' ॥ 1-122-40 ॥
