[ज] कथितॊ धार्तराष्ट्राणाम आर्षः संभव उत्तमः अमानुषॊ मानुषाणां भवता बरह्म वित्तम ॥ १-१०९-१ ॥

'Janamejaya inquired, "O revealer of Brahma's wisdom, you have narrated the remarkable tale of the extraordinary birth of Dhritarashtra's sons, bestowed by the grace of the Rishi.' ॥ 1-109-1 ॥

[ja] kathitò dhArtarASTrANAma ArSaH saMbhava uttamaH amAnuSò mAnuSANAM bhavatA barahma vittama ॥ 1-109-1 ॥

नामधेयानि चाप्य एषां कथ्यमानानि भागशः तवत्तः शरुतानि मे बरह्मन पाण्डवानां तु कीर्तय ॥ १-१०९-२ ॥

'The names and deeds of these Pandavas, as narrated by you, O Brahmin, I wish to hear in detail.' ॥ 1-109-2 ॥

nAmadheyAni cApya eSAM kathyamAnAni bhAgazaH tavattaH zarutAni me barahmana pANDavAnAM tu kIrtaya ॥ 1-109-2 ॥

ते हि सर्वे महात्मानॊ देवराजपराक्रमाः तवयैवांशावतरणे देव भागाः परकीर्तिताः ॥ १-१०९-३ ॥

'O Brahmana, I have heard all this from you. Now, please tell me in detail about the Pandavas and their earthly incarnations.' ॥ 1-109-3 ॥

te hi sarve mahAtmAnò devarAjaparAkramAH tavayaivAMzAvataraNe deva bhAgAH parakIrtitAH ॥ 1-109-3 ॥

तस्माद इच्छाम्य अहं शरॊतुम अतिमानुष कर्मणाम तेषाम आजननं सर्वं वैशम्पायन कीर्तय ॥ १-१०९-४ ॥

'You mentioned earlier that the Pandavas were all illustrious and possessed the might of gods, being incarnations of celestial beings, including the Asuras and other classes. Thus, I wish to hear about their extraordinary deeds, starting from their birth. O Vaisampayana, please narrate their accomplishments.' ॥ 1-109-4 ॥

tasmAda icchAmya ahaM zaròtuma atimAnuSa karmaNAma teSAma AjananaM sarvaM vaizampAyana kIrtaya ॥ 1-109-4 ॥

[व] राजा पाण्डुर महारण्ये मृगव्यालनिषेविते वने मैथुन कालस्थं ददर्श मृगयूथपम ॥ १-१०९-५ ॥

'Vaisampayana spoke, "O King, one day Pandu was wandering in the forest on the southern slopes of the Himavat, where deer and fierce wild animals abounded. There, he beheld a large deer, evidently the leader of a herd, attending to its mate."' ॥ 1-109-5 ॥
