तेषु जातेषु वृद्धेषु गतेषु परमां गतिम अब्रवीद भारतं लॊके मानुषे ऽसमिन महान ऋषिः ॥ १-१-५६॥
'It was not till after they were born, grown up, and departed on the supreme journey, that the great Rishi Vyasa published the Bharata in this region of mankind.' ॥ 1-1-56 ॥
english translation
teSu jAteSu vRddheSu gateSu paramAM gatima abravIda bhArataM lòke mAnuSe 'samina mahAna RSiH ॥ 1-1-56॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptजनमेजयेन पृष्टः सन बराह्मणैश च सहस्रशः शशास शिष्यम आसीनं वैशम्पायनम अन्तिके ॥ १-१-५७।
'When being solicited by Janamejaya and thousands of Brahmanas, he instructed his disciple Vaisampayana, who was seated near him.' ॥ 1-1-57 ॥

janamejayena pRSTaH sana barAhmaNaiza ca sahasrazaH zazAsa ziSyama AsInaM vaizampAyanama antike ॥ 1-1-57।
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस सदस्यैः सहासीनः शरावयाम आस भारतम कर्मान्तरेषु यज्ञस्य चॊद्यमानः पुनः पुनः ॥ १-१-५८॥
'He, sitting together with the Sadasyas, recited the Bharata, during the intervals of the ceremonies of the sacrifice, being repeatedly urged to proceed' ॥ 1-1-58 ॥

sa sadasyaiH sahAsInaH zarAvayAma Asa bhAratama karmAntareSu yajJasya còdyamAnaH punaH punaH ॥ 1-1-58॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptविस्तरं कुरुवंशस्य गान्धार्या धर्मशीलताम कषत्तुः परज्ञां धृतिं कुन्त्याः सम्यग दवैपायनॊ ऽबरवीत ॥ १-१-५९॥
'Vyasa has eloquently depicted the magnificence of the Kuru lineage, the virtuous ideals upheld by Gandhari, the wisdom embodied by Vidura, and the unwavering resolve of Kunti' ॥ 1-1-59 ॥

vistaraM kuruvaMzasya gAndhAryA dharmazIlatAma kaSattuH parajJAM dhRtiM kuntyAH samyaga davaipAyanò 'baravIta ॥ 1-1-59॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवासुदेवस्य माहात्म्यं पाण्डवानां च सत्यताम दुर्वृत्तं धार्तराष्ट्राणाम उक्तवान भगवान ऋषिः ॥ १-१-६०॥
'The noble Rishi hath also described the divinity of Vasudeva, the rectitude of the sons of Pandu, and the evil practices of the sons and partisans of Dhritarashtra.' ॥ 1-1-60 ॥
