कीर्तिं परथयता लॊके पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम अन्येषां कषत्रियाणां च भूरि दरविण तेजसाम ॥ १-५६-२६ ॥
'It is excellent, productive of fame, grants length of life, is sacred and heavenly. He who, from the desire of acquiring religious merit, causeth this history to be heard by sacred Brahmanas, acquireth great merit and virtue that is inexhaustible.' ॥ 1-56-26 ॥

kIrtiM parathayatA lòke pANDavAnAM mahAtmanAma anyeSAM kaSatriyANAM ca bhUri daraviNa tejasAma ॥ 1-56-26 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयथा समुद्रॊ भगवान यथा च हिमवान गिरिः खयाताव उभौ रत्ननिधी तथा भारतम उच्यते ॥ १-५६-२७ ॥
'He that reciteth the famous generation of the Kurus becometh immediately purified and acquireth a large family himself, and becometh respected in the world. That Brahmana who regularly studies this sacred Bharata for the four months of the rainy season, is cleansed from all his sins. He that has read the Bharata may be regarded as one acquainted with the Vedas.' ॥ 1-56-27 ॥

yathA samudrò bhagavAna yathA ca himavAna giriH khayAtAva ubhau ratnanidhI tathA bhAratama ucyate ॥ 1-56-27 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptय इदं शरावयेद विद्वान बराह्मणान इह पर्वसु धूतपाप्मा जितस्वर्गॊ बरह्मभूयं स गच्छति ॥ १-५६-२८ ॥
'This Bharata is a collection of all the Srutis and is fit to be heard by every virtuous person. That learned man who reciteth it to Brahmanas during the sacred lunations, becometh cleansed of all sins, and, not caring for heaven as it were, attaineth to a union with Brahma.' ॥ 1-56-28 ॥

ya idaM zarAvayeda vidvAna barAhmaNAna iha parvasu dhUtapApmA jitasvargò barahmabhUyaM sa gacchati ॥ 1-56-28 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयश चेदं शरावयेच छराद्धे बराह्मणान पादम अन्ततः अक्षय्यं तस्य तच छराद्धम उपतिष्ठेत पितॄन अपि ॥ १-५६-२९ ॥
'He that causeth even a single foot of this poem to be heard by Brahmanas during the performance of a Sraddha(funeral ceremony), maketh that Sraddha inexhaustible, the Pitris becoming ever gratified with the articles once presented to them.' ॥ 1-56-29 ॥

yaza cedaM zarAvayeca charAddhe barAhmaNAna pAdama antataH akSayyaM tasya taca charAddhama upatiSTheta pitRRna api ॥ 1-56-29 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअह्ना यद एनश चाज्ञानात परकरॊति नरश चरन तन महाभारताख्यानं शरुत्वैव परविलीयते ॥ १-५६-३० ॥
'The sins that are committed daily by our senses or the mind, those that are committed knowingly or unknowingly by any man, are all destroyed by hearing the Mahabharata.' ॥ 1-56-30 ॥

ahnA yada enaza cAjJAnAta parakaròti naraza carana tana mahAbhAratAkhyAnaM zarutvaiva paravilIyate ॥ 1-56-30 ॥
