[स] अथ कालस्य महतः स मुनिः संशितव्रतः तपस्य अभिरतॊ धीमान न दारान अभ्यकाङ्क्षत ।। १-३६-६ ।।

sanskrit

'Then, at a great moment in time, that sage, steadfast in his vows, wise and devoted to asceticism, had no desire for a wife.' ।। 1-36-6 ।।

english translation

[sa] atha kAlasya mahataH sa muniH saMzitavrataH tapasya abhiratò dhImAna na dArAna abhyakAGkSata || 1-36-6 ||

hk transliteration

स ऊर्ध्वरेतास तपसि परसक्तः; सवाध्यायवान वीतभयक्लमः सन चचार सर्वां पृथिवीं महात्मा; न चापि दारान मनसाप्य अकाङ्क्षत ।। १-३६-७ ।।

sanskrit

'Sauti said, 'Vasuki, desirous of bestowing his sister upon the Rishi Jaratkaru, gave the snakes (necessary) orders. But days went on, yet that wise Muni of rigid vows, deeply engaged in ascetic devotions, did not seek a wife. That high-souled Rishi, engaged in studies and deeply devoted to asceticism, his vital seed under full control, fearlessly wandered over the whole earth and had no wish for a wife.' ।। 1-36-7 ।।

english translation

sa UrdhvaretAsa tapasi parasaktaH; savAdhyAyavAna vItabhayaklamaH sana cacAra sarvAM pRthivIM mahAtmA; na cApi dArAna manasApya akAGkSata || 1-36-7 ||

hk transliteration

ततॊ ऽपरस्मिन संप्राप्ते काले कस्मिंश चिद एव तु परिक्षिद इति विख्यातॊ राजा कौरववंशभृत ।। १-३६-८ ।।

sanskrit

'Afterwards, once upon a time, there was a king, O Brahmana, of the name of Parikshit, born in the race of the Kauravas.' ।। 1-36-8 ।।

english translation

tatò 'parasmina saMprApte kAle kasmiMza cida eva tu parikSida iti vikhyAtò rAjA kauravavaMzabhRta || 1-36-8 ||

hk transliteration

यथा पाण्डुर महाबाहुर धनुर्धर वरॊ भुवि बभूव मृगया शीलः पुरास्य परपितामहः ।। १-३६-९ ।।

sanskrit

'And, like his great-grandfather Pandu of old, he was of mighty arms, the first of all bearers of bows in battle, and fond of hunting.' ।। 1-36-9 ।।

english translation

yathA pANDura mahAbAhura dhanurdhara varò bhuvi babhUva mRgayA zIlaH purAsya parapitAmahaH || 1-36-9 ||

hk transliteration

मृगान विध्यन वहारांश च तरक्षून महिषांस तथा अन्यांश च विविधान वन्यांश चचार पृथिवीपतिः ।। १-३६-१० ।।

sanskrit

'And the monarch wandered about, hunting deer, and wild boars, and wolves, and buffaloes and various other kinds of wild animals.' ।। 1-36-10 ।।

english translation

mRgAna vidhyana vahArAMza ca tarakSUna mahiSAMsa tathA anyAMza ca vividhAna vanyAMza cacAra pRthivIpatiH || 1-36-10 ||
