[देवाह] किं नव इमे मानवाः सर्वे दह्यन्ते कृष्णवर्त्मना कच चिन न संक्षयः पराप्तॊ लॊकानाम अमरेश्वर ॥ १-२१७-१६ ॥

'Approaching Indra, the celestial beings said, "Why, O lord of immortals, does Agni burn these creatures below? Has the time come for the destruction of the world?"' ॥ 1-217-16 ॥

[devAha] kiM nava ime mAnavAH sarve dahyante kRSNavartmanA kaca cina na saMkSayaH parAptò lòkAnAma amarezvara ॥ 1-217-16 ॥

[वै] तच छरुत्वा वृत्रहा तेभ्यः सवयम एवान्ववेक्ष्य च खाण्डवस्य विमॊक्षार्थं परययौ हरिवाहनः ॥ १-२१७-१७ ॥

'Vaisampayana continued, "Upon hearing the words of the gods and witnessing Agni's actions himself, the slayer of Vritra, Indra, set out to protect the forest of Khandava."' ॥ 1-217-17 ॥

[vai] taca charutvA vRtrahA tebhyaH savayama evAnvavekSya ca khANDavasya vimòkSArthaM parayayau harivAhanaH ॥ 1-217-17 ॥

महता मेघजालेन नानारूपेण वज्रभृत आकाशं समवस्तीर्य परववर्ष सुरेश्वरः ॥ १-२१७-१८ ॥

'And Vasava, the chief of the celestials soon covering the sky with masses of clouds of every kind began to shower upon the burning forest.' ॥ 1-217-18 ॥

ततॊ ऽकषमात्रा विसृजन धाराः शतसहस्रशः अभ्यवर्षत सहस्राक्षः पावकं खाण्डवं परति ॥ १-२१७-१९ ॥

'Hundreds and thousands of massive clouds, at Indra's command, poured rain upon Khandava, thick as the flagstaffs of battle-chariots.' ॥ 1-217-19 ॥

असंप्राप्तास तु ता धारास तेजसा जातवेदसः ख एव समशुष्यन्त न काश चित पावकं गताः ॥ १-२१७-२० ॥

'But those showers were completely dried up in the sky by the heat of the fire and thus could not reach the fire at all.' ॥ 1-217-20 ॥
