[आर्ज] किंनिमित्तम अभूद वैरं विश्वामित्र वसिष्ठयॊः वसतॊर आश्रमे पुण्ये शंस नः सर्वम एव तत ॥ १-१६५-१ ॥
'Continuing, Vaisampayana said, 'Upon hearing this, Arjuna inquired, 'O Gandharva, what led to the animosity between Viswamitra and Vasishtha, both residing in a divine hermitage? Please enlighten us on this matter.'' ॥ 1-165-1 ॥

[ग] इदं वासिष्ठम आख्यानं पुराणं परिचक्षते पार्थ सर्वेषु लॊकेषु यथावत तन निबॊध मे ॥ १-१६५-२ ॥
'The Gandharva responded, 'O Partha, the tale of Vasishtha is esteemed as a legend across all three realms. Allow me to narrate it to you in its entirety.'' ॥ 1-165-2 ॥

कन्यकुब्जे महान आसीत पार्थिवॊ भरतर्षभ गाधीति विश्रुतॊ लॊके सत्यधर्मपरायणः ॥ १-१६५-३ ॥
'In Kanyakubja, O noble scion of the Bharata lineage, there existed a renowned king of global renown named Gadhi, the son of Kusika.' ॥ 1-165-3 ॥
english translation
तस्य धर्मात्मनः पुत्रः समृद्धबलवाहनः विश्वामित्र इति खयातॊ बभूव रिपुमर्दनः ॥ १-१६५-४ ॥
'The virtuous Gadhi had a son named Vishwamitra, the conqueror of enemies, possessing a vast army along with numerous animals and chariots.' ॥ 1-165-4 ॥

स चचार सहामात्यॊ मृगयां गहने वने मृगान विध्यन वराहांश च रम्येषु मरु धन्वसु ॥ १-१६५-५ ॥
'Accompanied by his ministers, Viswamitra used to roam the deep woods in pursuit of deer, engaging in picturesque ascetic practices. With the aid of Vasishtha's ascetic power, the benevolent lord Vivaswat blessed him.' ॥ 1-165-5 ॥
