[आर्ज] कारणं बरूहि गन्धर्व किं तद येन सम धर्षिताः यान्तॊ बरह्मविदः सन्तः सर्वे रात्राव अरिंदम ॥ १-१५९-१ ॥

'Arjuna declared, "I am willing to accept your horses in exchange for my weapon. May our friendship endure eternally. O friend, please enlighten us on why we humans should fear the Gandharvas. As warriors who vanquish enemies and are knowledgeable in the Vedas, we seek your insight, O Gandharva, regarding the reproach we have faced while traveling at night."' ॥ 1-159-1 ॥

[Arja] kAraNaM barUhi gandharva kiM tada yena sama dharSitAH yAntò barahmavidaH santaH sarve rAtrAva ariMdama ॥ 1-159-1 ॥

[ग] अनग्नयॊ ऽनाहुतयॊ न च विप्र पुरस्कृताः यूयं ततॊ धर्षिताः सथ मया पाण्डवनन्दन ॥ १-१५९-२ ॥

'The Gandharva said, "You are without wives even though you have completed your period of study. You are without a specific stage of life (asrama). Finally, you are without a Brahmana accompanying you. Therefore, sons of Pandu, you have been criticized by me."' ॥ 1-159-2 ॥

[ga] anagnayò 'nAhutayò na ca vipra puraskRtAH yUyaM tatò dharSitAH satha mayA pANDavanandana ॥ 1-159-2 ॥

यक्षराक्षस गन्धर्वाः पिशाचॊरगमानवाः विस्तरं कुरुवंशस्य शरीमतः कथयन्ति ते ॥ १-१५९-३ ॥

'The Yakshas, Rakshasas, Gandharvas, Pisachas, Uragas, and Danavas, endowed with wisdom and intelligence, are familiar with the history of the Kuru lineage.' ॥ 1-159-3 ॥

नारदप्रभृतीनां च देवर्षीणां मया शरुतम गुणान कथयतां वीर पूर्वेषां तव धीमताम ॥ १-१५९-४ ॥

'O valiant one, I've also heard from Narada and other celestial sages about the noble deeds of your wise forefathers.' ॥ 1-159-4 ॥

'I myself, while traversing the entire earth bounded by her seas, have witnessed the might of your illustrious lineage.' ॥ 1-159-5 ॥
