[वै] वसत्सु तेषु परच्छन्नं पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु आजगामाथ तान दरष्टुं वयासः सत्यवती सुतः ॥ १-१५७-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana narrated, 'During the period when the illustrious Pandavas were living in disguise at the Brahmana's house, Vyasa, the son of Satyavati, paid them a visit.' ॥ 1-157-1 ॥

english translation

[vai] vasatsu teSu paracchannaM pANDaveSu mahAtmasu AjagAmAtha tAna daraSTuM vayAsaH satyavatI sutaH ॥ 1-157-1 ॥

तम आगतम अभिप्रेक्ष्य परत्युद्गम्य परंतपाः परणिपत्याभिवाद्यैनं तस्थुः पराञ्जलयस तदा ॥ १-१५७-२ ॥

'Upon seeing him arrive, the sons of Pandu, scorcher of foes, rose up, approached him, and after bowing down and saluting him, they stood with folded hands.' ॥ 1-157-2 ॥

english translation

tama Agatama abhiprekSya paratyudgamya paraMtapAH paraNipatyAbhivAdyainaM tasthuH parAJjalayasa tadA ॥ 1-157-2 ॥

समनुज्ञाप्य तान सर्वान आसीनान मुनिर अब्रवीत परसन्नः पूजितः पार्थैः परीतिपूर्वम इदं वचः ॥ १-१५७-३ ॥

'Thus worshipped by them, the sage became gratified. He asked them to be seated, and cheerfully addressing them, said:' ॥ 1-157-3 ॥

samanujJApya tAna sarvAna AsInAna munira abravIta parasannaH pUjitaH pArthaiH parItipUrvama idaM vacaH ॥ 1-157-3 ॥

अपि धर्मेण वर्तध्वं शास्त्रेण च परंतपाः अपि विप्रेषु वः पूजा पूजार्हेषु न हीयते ॥ १-१५७-४ ॥

'Ye slayers of foes, are ye living in the path of virtue and according to the scriptures? Do ye worship the Brahmanas? I hope you are not neglecting to pay homage to those who deserve your reverence?" ॥ 1-157-4 ॥

api dharmeNa vartadhvaM zAstreNa ca paraMtapAH api vipreSu vaH pUjA pUjArheSu na hIyate ॥ 1-157-4 ॥

अथ धर्मार्थवद वाक्यम उक्त्वा स भगवान ऋषिः विचित्राश च कथास तास ताः पुनर एवेदम अब्रवीत ॥ १-१५७-५ ॥

'Having spoken these words full of wisdom and virtue, the illustrious sage Vyasa then recounted various wondrous tales. After a while, he spoke again as follows:' ॥ 1-157-5 ॥

atha dharmArthavada vAkyama uktvA sa bhagavAna RSiH vicitrAza ca kathAsa tAsa tAH punara evedama abravIta ॥ 1-157-5 ॥
