[षौनक] सौते कथय ताम एतां विस्तरेण कथां पुनः आस्तीकस्य कवेः साधॊः शुश्रूषा परमा हि नः ॥ १-१४-१ ॥
'Saunaka said, 'O Sauti, relate once more in detail this history of the learned and virtuous Astika. Our curiosity for hearing it is great.'॥ 1-14-1 ॥
english translation
मधुरं कथ्यते सौम्य शलक्ष्णाक्षर पदं तवया परीयामहे भृशं तात पितेवेदं परभाषसे ॥ १-१४-२ ॥
'O charming one, your speech is delightful, marked by proper accent and emphasis. We find great pleasure in your words, reminiscent of your father's eloquence.'॥ 1-14-2 ॥
english translation
अस्मच छुश्रूषणे नित्यं पिता हि निरतस तव आचष्टैतद यथाख्यानं पिता ते तवं तथा वद ॥ १-१४-३ ॥
'Your father was always eager to please us. Now, narrate the story just as your father had shared it.'॥ 1-14-3 ॥
english translation
[स] आयुस्यम इदम आख्यानम आस्तीकं कथयामि ते यथा शरुतं कथयतः सकाशाद वै पितुर मया ॥ १-१४-४ ॥
'Sauti said, "O venerable one endowed with longevity, allow me to recount the tale of Astika as I received it from my father. Kindly lend your ears to this narrative, as it unfolded in the grand serpent sacrifice of King Janamejaya."'॥ 1-14-4 ॥

पुरा देवयुगे बरह्मन परजापतिसुते शुभे आस्तां भगिन्यौ रूपेण समुपेते ऽदभुते ऽनघे ॥ १-१४-५ ॥
'O Brahmana, in the golden age, Prajapati had two daughters. O sinless one, the sisters were endowed with wonderful beauty.'॥ 1-14-5 ॥
