[ज] कृपस्यापि महाब्रह्मन संभवं वक्तुम अर्हसि शरस्तम्भात कथं जज्ञे कथं चास्त्राण्य अवाप्तवान ॥ १-१२०-१ ॥
'Janamejaya inquired, 'O Brahmana, please narrate to me the complete story of Kripa's birth. How did he emerge from a clump of heath? And from where did he acquire his weapons?'' ॥ 1-120-1 ॥

[ja] kRpasyApi mahAbrahmana saMbhavaM vaktuma arhasi zarastambhAta kathaM jajJe kathaM cAstrANya avAptavAna ॥ 1-120-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscript[वै] महर्षेर गतमस्यासीच छरद्वान नाम नामतः पुत्रः किल महाराज जातः सह शरैर विभॊ ॥ १-१२०-२ ॥
'Vaisampayana replied, 'O king, the eminent sage Gautama had a son named Saradvan. It is said that Saradvan was born with arrows.'' ॥ 1-120-2 ॥

[vai] maharSera gatamasyAsIca charadvAna nAma nAmataH putraH kila mahArAja jAtaH saha zaraira vibhò ॥ 1-120-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptन तस्य वेदाध्ययने तथा बुद्धिर अजायत यथास्य बुद्धिर अभवद धनुर्वेदे परंतप ॥ १-१२०-३ ॥
'O vanquisher of foes, the son of Gautama showed remarkable skill in mastering the science of weaponry, but displayed no interest in other fields of study.' ॥ 1-120-3 ॥
english translation
na tasya vedAdhyayane tathA buddhira ajAyata yathAsya buddhira abhavada dhanurvede paraMtapa ॥ 1-120-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअधिजग्मुर यथा वेदांस तपसा बरह्मवादिनः तथा स तपसॊपेतः सर्वाण्य अस्त्राण्य अवाप ह ॥ १-१२०-४ ॥
'Just as the Brahmins, proficient in penance, mastered the Vedas, he, endowed with penance, acquired all the weapons.' ॥ 1-120-4 ॥

adhijagmura yathA vedAMsa tapasA barahmavAdinaH tathA sa tapasòpetaH sarvANya astrANya avApa ha ॥ 1-120-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptधनुर्वेद परत्वाच च तपसा विपुलेन च भृशं संतापयाम आस देवराजं स गौतमः ॥ १-१२०-५ ॥
'By his expertise in archery and through extensive penance, Gautama greatly pleased the king of the gods.' ॥ 1-120-5 ॥

dhanurveda paratvAca ca tapasA vipulena ca bhRzaM saMtApayAma Asa devarAjaM sa gautamaH ॥ 1-120-5 ॥
