[स] कर्मान्तरेष्व अकथयन दविजा वेदाश्रयाः कथाः वयासस तव अकथयन नित्यम आख्यानं भारतं महत ॥ १-५३-३१ ॥

'Sauti explained, 'During the intervals of their rituals, the Brahmanas discussed various topics based on the Vedas. However, Vyasa narrated the extraordinary and extensive history known as the Bharata.' ॥ 1-53-31 ॥

[sa] karmAntareSva akathayana davijA vedAzrayAH kathAH vayAsasa tava akathayana nityama AkhyAnaM bhArataM mahata ॥ 1-53-31 ॥

[ष] महाभारतम आख्यानं पाण्डवानां यशः करम जनमेजयेन यत पृष्टः कृष्णद्वैपायनस तदा ॥ १-५३-३२ ॥

'Saunaka said, 'That sacred history called the Mahabharata, spreading the fame of the Pandavas, which Krishna-Dwaipayana, asked by Janamejaya.' ॥ 1-53-32 ॥

[Sa] mahAbhAratama AkhyAnaM pANDavAnAM yazaH karama janamejayena yata pRSTaH kRSNadvaipAyanasa tadA ॥ 1-53-32 ॥

शरावयाम आस विधिवत तदा कर्मान्तरेषु सः ताम अहं विधिवत पुण्यां शरॊतुम इच्छामि वै कथाम ॥ १-५३-३३ ॥

'Sauti said, "Properly, the illustrious Vyasa narrated the virtuous narrative of the Mahabharata during the intervals of the rituals. I wish to hear that narrative again in a similar manner."' ॥ 1-53-33 ॥

zarAvayAma Asa vidhivata tadA karmAntareSu saH tAma ahaM vidhivata puNyAM zaròtuma icchAmi vai kathAma ॥ 1-53-33 ॥

मनः सागरसंभूतां महर्षेः पुण्यकर्मणः कथयस्व सतां शरेष्ठ न हि तृप्यामि सूतज ॥ १-५३-३४ ॥

'After the sacrifice was completed, that history, born of the ocean-like mind of the great Rishi, was duly recited. I desire to hear it properly.' ॥ 1-53-34 ॥

manaH sAgarasaMbhUtAM maharSeH puNyakarmaNaH kathayasva satAM zareSTha na hi tRpyAmi sUtaja ॥ 1-53-34 ॥

[स] हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि महद आख्यानम उत्तमम कृष्णद्वैपायन मतं महाभारतम आदितः ॥ १-५३-३५ ॥

'Sauti said, 'I shall recite to thee from the beginning of that excellent history called the Mahabharata composed by Vyasa. O Brahmana, listen to it in full, as I recite it. I feel great pleasure in reciting it.'' ॥ 1-53-35 ॥

[sa] hanta te kathayiSyAmi mahada AkhyAnama uttamama kRSNadvaipAyana mataM mahAbhAratama AditaH ॥ 1-53-35 ॥
