[स] कर्मान्तरेष्व अकथयन दविजा वेदाश्रयाः कथाः वयासस तव अकथयन नित्यम आख्यानं भारतं महत ।। १-५३-३१ ।।

'Sauti explained, 'During the intervals of their rituals, the Brahmanas discussed various topics based on the Vedas. However, Vyasa narrated the extraordinary and extensive history known as the Bharata.' ।। 1-53-31 ।।

[sa] karmAntareSva akathayana davijA vedAzrayAH kathAH vayAsasa tava akathayana nityama AkhyAnaM bhArataM mahata || 1-53-31 ||

'Saunaka said, 'That sacred history called the Mahabharata, spreading the fame of the Pandavas, which Krishna-Dwaipayana, asked by Janamejaya.' ।। 1-53-32 ।।

'Sauti said, "Properly, the illustrious Vyasa narrated the virtuous narrative of the Mahabharata during the intervals of the rituals. I wish to hear that narrative again in a similar manner."' ।। 1-53-33 ।।

zarAvayAma Asa vidhivata tadA karmAntareSu saH tAma ahaM vidhivata puNyAM zaròtuma icchAmi vai kathAma || 1-53-33 ||

'After the sacrifice was completed, that history, born of the ocean-like mind of the great Rishi, was duly recited. I desire to hear it properly.' ।। 1-53-34 ।।
