शलॊकाः सप्तशतं चात्र पञ्च सप्ततिर उच्यते संखया भारताख्यानं कर्त्रा हय अत्र महात्मना परणीतं सज्जन मनॊ वैक्लव्याश्रु परवर्तकम ॥ १-२-१९५ ॥
'Here, there are seven hundred verses, and it is said to have been composed by the illustrious author Vyasa in the Bharata narrative. This composition, named 'Mahabharata,' skillfully crafted by the great soul, stirs the hearts of virtuous readers, inducing a pure stream of tears.' ॥ 1-2-195 ॥
