[आर्ह] तापत्य इति यद वाक्यम उक्तवान असि माम इह तद अहं जञातुम इच्छामि तापत्यार्थ विनिश्चयम ॥ १-१६०-१ ॥
'Arjuna said, 'You have referred to me several times as 'son of Tapati.' Therefore, I wish to understand the exact meaning of this term.' ॥ 1-160-1 ॥

[Arha] tApatya iti yada vAkyama uktavAna asi mAma iha tada ahaM jaJAtuma icchAmi tApatyArtha vinizcayama ॥ 1-160-1 ॥

'What is the significance of the name 'Tapati' that you've mentioned? We, the sons of Kunti, are indeed eager to understand its true meaning.' ॥ 1-160-2 ॥

tapatI nAma kA caiSA tApatyA yatkRte vayama kaunteyA hi vayaM sAdhò tattvama icchAmi vedituma ॥ 1-160-2 ॥

'Vaisampayana continued, 'Upon hearing this, the Gandharva narrated to Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti, the well-known story that resounded throughout the three worlds.'' ॥ 1-160-3 ॥

[vai] evama uktaH sa gandharvaH kuntIputraM dhanaMjayama vizrutAM tariSu lòkeSu zarAvayAma Asa vai kathAma ॥ 1-160-3 ॥

'The Gandharva replied, 'O son of Pritha, O foremost among the wise, I shall narrate to you this delightful tale in its entirety.'' ॥ 1-160-4 ॥

[ga] hanta te kathayiSyAmi kathAma etAM manòramAma yathAvada akhilAM pArtha dharmyAM dharmabhRtAM vara ॥ 1-160-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptउक्तवान अस्मि येन तवां तापत्य इति यद वचः तत ते ऽहं कथ्ययिष्यामि शृणुष्वैक मना मम ॥ १-१६०-५ ॥
'I have spoken the words 'Tapatya' addressing you. Now I shall explain to you the meaning behind it. Listen attentively with a focused mind.' ॥ 1-160-5 ॥

uktavAna asmi yena tavAM tApatya iti yada vacaH tata te 'haM kathyayiSyAmi zRNuSvaika manA mama ॥ 1-160-5 ॥
