स च श्रीमानचिन्त्यात्मा रामो दशरथात्मजः । सूतं सञ्चोदयामास त्वरितं वाह्यतामिति ॥ २-४०-३१

The son of Dasaratha, glorious Rama of inconceivable courage, exhorted the charioteer to drive the chariot fast. ॥ 2-40-31॥

रामो याहीति सूतं तं तिष्ठेति स जनस्तदा । उभयं नाशकत्सूतः कर्तुमध्वनि चोदितः ॥ २-४०-३२

Urged by Rama to drive fast on the one hand and by the citizens to stay, on the other, the charioteer could do neither on the way. ॥ 2-40-32॥

rAmo yAhIti sUtaM taM tiSTheti sa janastadA । ubhayaM nAzakatsUtaH kartumadhvani coditaH ॥ 2-40-32

निर्गच्छति महाबाहौ रामे पौरजनाश्रुभिः । पतितैरभ्यवहितं प्रशशाम महीरजः ॥ २-४०-३३

As the mightyarmed Rama was going away, the dust raised from the earth subsided with the tears falling from the citizens' (eyes). ॥ 2-40-33॥

nirgacchati mahAbAhau rAme paurajanAzrubhiH । patitairabhyavahitaM prazazAma mahIrajaH ॥ 2-40-33

रुदिताश्रुपरिद्यूनं हाहाकृतमचेतनम् । प्रयाणे राघवस्यासीत्पुरं परमपीडितम् ॥ २-४०-३४

At the time of Rama's departure, the insensate city was drenched with tears of the deeply afflicted people crying, 'Alas, Alas'. ॥ 2-40-34॥

Tears born of anguish fell from the eyes of women just as waterdrops fall from lotuses shaken by the movements of fishes. ॥ 2-40-35॥
