स च श्रीमानचिन्त्यात्मा रामो दशरथात्मजः | सूतं सञ्चोदयामास त्वरितं वाह्यतामिति || २-४०-३१

The son of Dasaratha, glorious Rama of inconceivable courage, exhorted the charioteer to drive the chariot fast. [2-40-31]

english translation

sa ca zrImAnacintyAtmA rAmo dazarathAtmajaH | sUtaM saJcodayAmAsa tvaritaM vAhyatAmiti || 2-40-31

रामो याहीति सूतं तं तिष्ठेति स जनस्तदा | उभयं नाशकत्सूतः कर्तुमध्वनि चोदितः || २-४०-३२

sanskrit

Urged by Rama to drive fast on the one hand and by the citizens to stay, on the other, the charioteer could do neither on the way. [2-40-32]

english translation

rAmo yAhIti sUtaM taM tiSTheti sa janastadA | ubhayaM nAzakatsUtaH kartumadhvani coditaH || 2-40-32

निर्गच्छति महाबाहौ रामे पौरजनाश्रुभिः | पतितैरभ्यवहितं प्रशशाम महीरजः || २-४०-३३

As the mightyarmed Rama was going away, the dust raised from the earth subsided with the tears falling from the citizens' (eyes). [2-40-33]

nirgacchati mahAbAhau rAme paurajanAzrubhiH | patitairabhyavahitaM prazazAma mahIrajaH || 2-40-33

रुदिताश्रुपरिद्यूनं हाहाकृतमचेतनम् | प्रयाणे राघवस्यासीत्पुरं परमपीडितम् || २-४०-३४

At the time of Rama's departure, the insensate city was drenched with tears of the deeply afflicted people crying, 'Alas, Alas'. [2-40-34]

Tears born of anguish fell from the eyes of women just as waterdrops fall from lotuses shaken by the movements of fishes. [2-40-35]
