रामस्य तु वचः श्रुत्वा मुनि वेष धरम् च तम् । समीक्ष्य सह भार्याभी राजा विगत चेतनः ॥ २-३९-१

After hearing Rama and beholding him in the robes of an ascetic, Dasaratha and his wives fell unconscious. [2-39-1]

english translation

नैनं दुःखेन सन्तप्तः प्रत्यवैक्षत राघवम् । न चैनमभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य प्रत्यभाषत दुर्मनाः ॥ २-३९-२

With his body and mind afflicted with grief, Dasaratha could not look Rama in the face nor could he make a reply. [2-39-2]

english translation

स मुहूर्तमिवासंज्ञो दुःखितश्च महीपतिः । विललाप महाबाहू राममेवानुचिन्तयन् ॥ २-३९-३

The mightyarmed king lost consciousness for a moment and in grief lamented, brooding only over Rama. [2-39-3]

english translation

मन्ये खलु मया पूर्वं विवत्सा बहवःकृताः । प्राणिनो हिंसिता वापि तस्मादिदमुपस्थितम् ॥ २-३९-४

- 'In the past I must have separated many from their children or harmed many living beings. That is why I think this calamity has befallen me. [2-39-4]

english translation

न त्वेवानागते काले देहाच्च्यवति जीवितम् । कैकेय्या क्लिश्यमानस्य मृत्युर्मम न विद्यते ॥ २-३९-५

Unless the destined hour arrives, life does not leave the body. Therefore, even though I am tormented by Kaikeyi, my end does not come. [2-39-5]
