ततः श्रुत्वा महाराजः कैकेय्या दारुणम् वचः । चिन्तामभिसमापेदे मुहूर्तम् प्रतताप च ॥ २-१२-१
After hearing the dreadful words of Kaikeyi, the maharaja (Dasharatha), engulfed in grief, was extremely distressed for a moment. [2-12-1]
english translation
किम् नु मे यदि वा स्वप्नश्चित्तमोहोओऽपि वामम । अनुभूतोपसर्गो वा मनसो वाप्युपद्रवः ॥ २-१२-२
' Is this a dream? Or a hallucination of the mind? Or some foreboding evil I am going to experience or a malady of my mind'? (wondered Dasharatha) [2-12-2]
english translation
इति संचिन्त्य तद्राजा नाध्यगच्छ त्तदा सुखम् । प्रतिलभ्य चिरात्सम्ज्ञाम् कैकेयीवाक्यताडितः ॥ २-१२-३
The King absorbed in such thoughts did not get solace. He had long lost the senses struck by the (ruthless) words of Kaikeyi. [2-12-3]

व्यथितो विक्लबशचैव व्याघ्रीम् दृष्ट्वा यथा मृगः । असम्वृतायामासीनो जगत्याम् दीर्घमुच्छ्वसन् ॥ २-१२-४
He was startled and distressed like a deer beholding a tigress. He sank down upon the bare floor heaving deep sighs . - [2-12-4]

मण्ड्ले पन्नगो रुद्धो मन्त्रैरिव महाविषः । अहोधिगिति सामर्षो वाचमुक्त्वा नराधिपः ॥ २-१२-५
- like a venomous serpent lying confined in a circle. 'What a pity' said the king with indignation . - [2-12-5]
