शोकपर्यायसन्तप्तः सततं दीर्घमुच्छ्वसन् । अयोध्यायाम् जनः सर्वः शुशोच जगतीपतिम् ॥ २-४१-१६
All the citizens of Ayodhya, afflicted with a series of grief and heaving deep sighs ceaselessly bewailed at the sight of the lord of the world (Dasaratha). ॥ 2-41-16॥
english translation
zokaparyAyasantaptaH satataM dIrghamucchvasan । ayodhyAyAm janaH sarvaH zuzoca jagatIpatim ॥ 2-41-16
hk transliteration by Sanscriptबाष्प पर्याकुल मुखो राज मार्ग गतः जनः । न हृष्टः लक्ष्यते कश्चित् सर्वः शोक परायणः ॥ २-४१-१७
The faces of the people on the highway were turbid with tears. None looked happy. All were plunged in sorrow. ॥ 2-41-17॥
english translation
bASpa paryAkula mukho rAja mArga gataH janaH । na hRSTaH lakSyate kazcit sarvaH zoka parAyaNaH ॥ 2-41-17
hk transliteration by Sanscriptन वाति पवनः शीतः न शशी सौम्य दर्शनः । न सूर्यस्तपते लोकं सर्वं पर्याकुलं जगत् ॥ २-४१-१८
The breeze did not blow cool. No more did the Moon look pleasant. The Sun did not give warmth to the world. All the world was agitated. ॥ 2-41-18॥
english translation
na vAti pavanaH zItaH na zazI saumya darzanaH । na sUryastapate lokaM sarvaM paryAkulaM jagat ॥ 2-41-18
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअनर्थिनः सुताः स्त्रीणाम् भर्तारः भ्रातरः तथा । सर्वे सर्वं परित्यज्य राममेवान्वचिन्तयन् ॥ २-४१-१९
Mothers stopped thinking of their sons and husbands of their wives. Brothers were no longer interested in each other. Every one deserted every one and thought only of Rama. ॥ 2-41-19॥

anarthinaH sutAH strINAm bhartAraH bhrAtaraH tathA । sarve sarvaM parityajya rAmamevAnvacintayan ॥ 2-41-19
hk transliteration by Sanscriptये तु रामस्य सुहृद स्सर्वे ते मूढचेतसः । शोकभारेण चाक्रान्ता शयनं न जहुस्तदा ॥ २-४१-२०
All the friends of Rama were stupefied. Afflicted with the burden of sorrow they did not leave their bed. ॥ 2-41-20॥

ye tu rAmasya suhRda ssarve te mUDhacetasaH । zokabhAreNa cAkrAntA zayanaM na jahustadA ॥ 2-41-20
