मन्थरा त्वभ्यसूयैनामुत्सृज्याभरणं च तत्| उवाचेदं ततो वाक्यं कोपदुःखसमन्विता || २-८-१

Annoyed with Kaikeyi and filled with rage and sorrow, Manthara discarded the ornament (gifted to her) and said these words: - [2-8-1]

english translation

mantharA tvabhyasUyainAmutsRjyAbharaNaM ca tat| uvAcedaM tato vAkyaM kopaduHkhasamanvitA || 2-8-1

hk transliteration

हर्षं किमिदमस्थाने कृतवत्यसि बालिशे | शोकसागरमध्यस्थमात्मानं नावबुध्यसे || २-८-२

sanskrit

- 'Oh ! foolish one, why do you display this misplaced happiness, little realising that you are in the midst of an ocean of sorrow? [2-8-2]

english translation

harSaM kimidamasthAne kRtavatyasi bAlize | zokasAgaramadhyasthamAtmAnaM nAvabudhyase || 2-8-2

hk transliteration

मनसा प्रहसामि त्वां देवि दुःखार्धिता सती | यच्छोचितव्ये हृष्टासि प्राप्येदं व्यसनं महत् || २-८-३

sanskrit

Oh ! devi ( queen Kaikeyi ), at a time when this great misfortune has befallen you, you are rejoicing instead of feeling miserable. I am indeed laughing at you at heart. [2-8-3]

english translation

manasA prahasAmi tvAM devi duHkhArdhitA satI | yacchocitavye hRSTAsi prApyedaM vyasanaM mahat || 2-8-3

hk transliteration

शोचामि दुर्मतित्वं ते का हि प्राज्ञा प्रहर्षयेत् | अरेः सपत्नीपुत्रस्य वृद्धिं मृत्युमिवागताम् || २-८-४

sanskrit

I pity your false notion. Will any wise woman rejoice at the prosperity of the son of a cowife who is like an enemy? This is like (courting) death. [2-8-4]

english translation

zocAmi durmatitvaM te kA hi prAjJA praharSayet | areH sapatnIputrasya vRddhiM mRtyumivAgatAm || 2-8-4

hk transliteration

भरतादेव रामस्य राज्यसाधारणाद्भयम् | तद्विचिन्त्य विषण्णास्मि भय भीताद्धि जायते || २-८-५

sanskrit

Since Bharata and Rama have equal claim to the kingdom, Bharata is a source of fear for Rama. Having thought over this matter, I am dejected. Danger springs from one who is in fear. [2-8-5]

english translation

bharatAdeva rAmasya rAjyasAdhAraNAdbhayam | tadvicintya viSaNNAsmi bhaya bhItAddhi jAyate || 2-8-5
