पुत्र शोक अर्दितम् पापा विसम्ज्ञम् पतितम् भुवि । विवेष्टमानम् उदीक्ष्य सा ऐक्ष्वाकम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ २-१४-१
The evil woman (Kaikeyi) said to the king of the Ikshvaku race (Dasaratha) who lay unconscious on the floor writhing and tormented with grief on account of his son. - [2-14-1]
english translation
पापम् क्ऱ्त्वा इव किम् इदम् मम संश्रुत्य संश्रवम् । शेषे क्षिति तले सन्नः स्थित्याम् स्थातुम् त्वम् अर्हसि ॥ २-१४-२
- '(Kaikeyi said) What is this? After hearing my response to the promised boon, why are you lying down on the floor dejected as if you had committed a sin? It behoves you to maintain your status. [2-14-2]
english translation
आहुः सत्यम् हि परमम् धर्मम् धर्मविदो जनाः । सत्यम् आश्रित्य हि मया त्वम् च धर्मम् प्रचोदितः ॥२-१४-३
Those conversant with righteousness say that truth is a great virtue. By following the truth, I have enlightened you about your duty. [2-14-3]
english translation
संश्रुत्य शैब्यः श्येनाय स्वाम् तनुम् जगती पतिः । प्रदाय पक्षिणो राजन् जगाम गतिम् उत्तमाम् ॥ २-१४-४
Oh ! King, the Ruler of the earth (king) Shaibya attained the highest state by offering his own body to a hawk in accordance with his promise. [2-14-4]
english translation
तथ हि अलर्कः तेजस्वी ब्राह्मणे वेद पारगे । याचमाने स्वके नेत्रेउद्ध्ऱ्त्य अविमना ददौ ॥ २-१४-५
In the same way the lustrous king Alarka, on being solicited by a brahmin who was an adept in the Vedas, plucked his own eyes and gave them to him without hesitation. [2-14-5]
