तथैवायुधजालानि भ्रातृभ्यां कवचानि च | रथोपस्थे प्रतिन्यस्य सचर्म कठिनं च तत् || २-४०-१६

So also Dasaratha secured a multitude of weapons, shields and protective leathercoverings for hands and placed them at the centre of the chariot, for use by the brothers. [2-40-16]

tathaivAyudhajAlAni bhrAtRbhyAM kavacAni ca | rathopasthe pratinyasya sacarma kaThinaM ca tat || 2-40-16

सीतातृतीयानारूढान् दृष्ट्वा दृष्टमचोदयत् | सुमन्त्रस्सम्मतानश्वान् वायुवेगसमान्जवे || २-४०-१७

sanskrit

When Sumantra ensured that Sita, Rama and Lakshmana boarded the chariot, he briskly hastened the horses which were as speedy as the wind. [2-40-17]

sItAtRtIyAnArUDhAn dRSTvA dRSTamacodayat | sumantrassammatAnazvAn vAyuvegasamAnjave || 2-40-17

प्रतियाते महारण्यं चिररात्राय राघवे | बभूव नगरे मूर्छा बलमूर्छा जनस्य च || २-४०-१८

Having seen Rama set out for the great forest for a long period, the city was stilled and men were enervated. [2-40-18]

तत्समाकुलसम्भ्रान्तं मत्तसङ्कुपितद्विपम् | हयशिञ्जितनिर्घोषं पुरमासीन्महास्वनम् || २-४०-१९

The city was distressed and flurried by the intoxicated elephants, provoked by the mighty sound of the tinkling of bells and the neighing of the horses. [2-40-19]

tatsamAkulasambhrAntaM mattasaGkupitadvipam | hayaziJjitanirghoSaM puramAsInmahAsvanam || 2-40-19

ततः सबाल वृद्धा सा पुरी परम पीडिता | रामम् एव अभिदुद्राव घर्म आर्तः सलिलम् यथा || २-४०-२०

Thereafter the extremely afflicted people of the city, including young and old alike, ran towards Rama like men oppressed with heat running for water. [2-40-20]
