इज्याध्ययन दानानि तपः सत्यं कषमा दमः अलॊभ इति मार्गॊ ऽयं धर्मस्याष्ट विधः समृतः ।। ३-२-७१ ।।

sanskrit

'The essential duties, according to the Vedas, are sacrifices, study of the scriptures, giving, penance, truthfulness, forgiveness, self-control, and renunciation of desires. These eight cardinal duties constitute the true path.' ।। 3-2-71 ।।

english translation

ijyAdhyayana dAnAni tapaH satyaM kaSamA damaH alòbha iti mArgò 'yaM dharmasyASTa vidhaH samRtaH || 3-2-71 ||

'Of these duties, the first four are aimed at attaining the world of the Pitris (ancestors) and should be performed without ego or personal pride.' ।। 3-2-72 ।।

'The remaining four, which lead to the heavenly realms, are practiced by the devout and should also be followed with humility. Those seeking spiritual liberation must rigorously adhere to eightfold paths. ' ।। 3-2-73 ।।

'Those who seek to achieve salvation must act with complete detachment from personal motives, rigorously control their senses, steadfastly observe their vows, faithfully serve their teachers, discipline their diet, diligently study the Vedas, eschew base actions, and restrain their hearts.' ।। 3-2-74 ।।

'Those who wish to conquer the cycle of existence should practice the following: proper diet and discipline, proper study and understanding of the scriptures, renunciation of wrongful actions, and complete control of the mind.' ।। 3-2-75 ।।
