[व] परभातायां तु शर्वर्यां तेषाम अक्लिष्टकर्मणाम वनं यियासतां विप्रास तस्थुर भिक्षा भुजॊ ऽगरतः तान उवाच ततॊ राजा कुन्तीपुत्रॊ युधिष्ठिरः ।। ३-२-१ ।।

sanskrit

'As dawn broke, and the night ended, the Brahmanas, who had undertaken difficult vows, stood in front, ready to offer alms to those about to depart for the forest. Then, King Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, spoke to them.' ।। 3-2-1 ।।

english translation

[va] parabhAtAyAM tu zarvaryAM teSAma akliSTakarmaNAma vanaM yiyAsatAM viprAsa tasthura bhikSA bhujò 'garataH tAna uvAca tatò rAjA kuntIputrò yudhiSThiraH || 3-2-1 ||

hk transliteration

वयं हि हृतसर्वस्वा हृतराज्या हृतश्रियः फलमूलामिषाहारा वनं यास्याम दुःखिताः ।। ३-२-२ ।।

sanskrit

'Deprived of our prosperity and kingdom, robbed of everything, we are about to enter the deep forest in sorrow, relying on fruits, roots, and whatever we can hunt for our sustenance.' ।। 3-2-2 ।।

english translation

vayaM hi hRtasarvasvA hRtarAjyA hRtazriyaH phalamUlAmiSAhArA vanaM yAsyAma duHkhitAH || 3-2-2 ||

hk transliteration

वनं च दॊषबहुलं बहु वयालसरीसृपम परिक्लेशश च वॊ मन्ये धरुवं तत्र भविष्यति ।। ३-२-३ ।।

sanskrit

'The forest is filled with dangers and teems with reptiles and beasts of prey. I fear that you will certainly endure great hardships and suffering there.' ।। 3-2-3 ।।

english translation

vanaM ca dòSabahulaM bahu vayAlasarIsRpama pariklezaza ca vò manye dharuvaM tatra bhaviSyati || 3-2-3 ||

hk transliteration

बराह्मणानां परिक्लेशॊ दैवतान्य अपि सादयेत किं पुनर माम इतॊ विप्रा निवर्तध्वं यथेष्टतः ।। ३-२-४ ।।

sanskrit

'The trials faced by Brahmanas could overwhelm even the gods; that they would be too much for me is beyond doubt. Therefore, O Brahmanas, please return to wherever you wish!' ।। 3-2-4 ।।

english translation

barAhmaNAnAM pariklezò daivatAnya api sAdayeta kiM punara mAma itò viprA nivartadhvaM yatheSTataH || 3-2-4 ||

hk transliteration

[बर] गतिर या भवतां राजंस तां वयं गन्तुम उद्यताः नार्हथास्मान परित्यक्तुं भक्तान सद धर्मदर्शिनः ।। ३-२-५ ।।

sanskrit

'The Brahmanas replied, 'O King, our path is the same as yours. Therefore, it does not befit you to abandon us, your devoted followers who practice true righteousness.'' ।। 3-2-5 ।।

english translation

[bara] gatira yA bhavatAM rAjaMsa tAM vayaM gantuma udyatAH nArhathAsmAna parityaktuM bhaktAna sada dharmadarzinaH || 3-2-5 ||
