[देव] कामं देवापि मां विप्र न विजानन्ति तत्त्वतः तवत परीत्या तु परवक्ष्यामि यथेदं विसृजाम्य अहम ॥ ३-१८७-१ ॥
'Markandeya continued, "The Deity then said, 'O Brahmana, even the gods do not truly comprehend my essence. However, as I am pleased with you, I shall reveal to you how I brought the universe into existence.'"' ॥ 3-187-1 ॥
english translation
पितृभक्तॊ ऽसि विप्रर्षे मां चैव शरणं गतः अतॊ दृष्टॊ ऽसमि ते साक्षाद बरह्मचर्यं च ते महत ॥ ३-१८७-२ ॥
'O venerable sage, you are devoted to your ancestors and have sought my refuge. You have been granted the vision of me, and your ascetic merit is truly profound.' ॥ 3-187-2 ॥
english translation
आपॊ नारा इति परॊक्ताः संज्ञा नाम कृतं मया तेन नारायणॊ ऽसम्य उक्तॊ मम तद धययनं सदा ॥ ३-१८७-३ ॥
'In ancient times, I named the waters Nara. Since the waters have always been my ayana (abode), I came to be known as Narayana, the one whose home is in the waters.' ॥ 3-187-3 ॥
english translation
अहं नारायणॊ नाम परभवः शाश्वतॊ ऽवययः विधाता सर्वभूतानां संहर्ता च दविजॊत्तम ॥ ३-१८७-४ ॥
'O foremost of the regenerate, I am Narayana, the eternal, unchanging source of all existence. I am the creator of all beings and their destroyer as well.' ॥ 3-187-4 ॥
english translation
अहं विष्णुर अहं बरह्मा शक्रश चाहं सुराधिपः अहं वैश्रवणॊ राजा यमः परेताधिपस तथा ॥ ३-१८७-५ ॥
'I am Vishnu, I am Brahma, and I am Sakra, the chief of the gods. I am King Vaisravana, and I am Yama, the lord of the departed souls.' ॥ 3-187-5 ॥
