[य] वासुदेव महाबाहॊ विस्तरेण महामते सौभस्य वधम आचक्ष्व न हि तृप्यामि कथ्यतः ॥ ३-१६-१ ॥
'Yudhishthira said: "O illustrious Vasudeva, of mighty arms, please describe in detail the death of the lord of Saubha. My curiosity remains unsatisfied by the account provided."' ॥ 3-16-1 ॥
english translation
[वा] हतं शरुत्वा महाबाहॊ मया शरौतश्रवं नृपम उपायाद भरतश्रेष्ठ शाल्वॊ दवारवतीं पुरीम ॥ ३-१६-२ ॥
'Vasudeva said: "O mighty-armed king, upon hearing that I had slain the son of Srutasravas (Shishupala), Shalva, O best of the Bharatas, came to the city of Dwaraka."' ॥ 3-16-2 ॥

अरुन्धत तां सुदुष्टात्मा सर्वतः पाण्डुनन्दन शाल्वॊ वैहायसं चापि तत पुरं वयूह्य विष्ठितः ॥ ३-१६-३ ॥
'The wicked king, setting up his forces, besieged the city from all directions and began his assault from the sky.' ॥ 3-16-3 ॥

तत्रस्थॊ ऽथ महीपालॊ यॊधयाम आस तां पुरीम अभिसारेण सर्वेण तत्र युद्धम अवर्तत ॥ ३-१६-४ ॥
'The battle commenced with a fierce barrage of weapons from every side.' ॥ 3-16-4 ॥

पुरी समन्ताद विहिता सपताका सतॊरणा सचक्रा सहुडा चैव सयान्त्र खनका तथा ॥ ३-१६-५ ॥
'At that time, Dwaraka was fortified according to the science of defense, with banners, arches, combatants, walls, turrets, and various engines.' ॥ 3-16-5 ॥
