कार्पण्यं दर्पमानौ च भयम उद्वेग एव च अर्थजानि विदुः पराज्ञा दुःखान्य एतानि देहिनाम ।। ३-२-४१ ।।

sanskrit

'Wealth is the root of miserliness, boastfulness, pride, fear, and anxiety. The wise recognize these as the true miseries associated with riches.' ।। 3-2-41 ।।

english translation

kArpaNyaM darpamAnau ca bhayama udvega eva ca arthajAni viduH parAjJA duHkhAnya etAni dehinAma || 3-2-41 ||

अर्थस्यॊपार्जने दुःखं पालने च कषये तथा नाशे दुःखं वयये दुःखं घनन्ति चैवार्थ कारणात ।। ३-२-४२ ।।

sanskrit

'People endure countless sufferings in acquiring and retaining wealth, and even its expenditure is accompanied by grief. Sometimes, life itself is sacrificed for the sake of wealth.' ।। 3-2-42 ।।

english translation

arthasyòpArjane duHkhaM pAlane ca kaSaye tathA nAze duHkhaM vayaye duHkhaM ghananti caivArtha kAraNAta || 3-2-42 ||

अर्था दुःखं परित्यक्तुं पालिताश चापि ते ऽसुखाः दुःखेन चाधिगम्यन्ते तेषां नाशं न चिन्तयेत ।। ३-२-४३ ।।

sanskrit

'The abandonment of wealth brings its sorrows, and those who benefit from one's wealth may become enemies due to it.' ।। 3-2-43 ।।

english translation

arthA duHkhaM parityaktuM pAlitAza cApi te 'sukhAH duHkhena cAdhigamyante teSAM nAzaM na cintayeta || 3-2-43 ||

असंतॊष परा मूढाः संतॊषं यान्ति पण्डिताः अन्तॊ नास्ति पिपासायाः संतॊषः परमं सुखम ।। ३-२-४४ ।।

sanskrit

'Given that the possession of wealth is fraught with such misery, one should not be distressed by its loss. Only the ignorant are truly discontented.' ।। 3-2-44 ।।

english translation

asaMtòSa parA mUDhAH saMtòSaM yAnti paNDitAH antò nAsti pipAsAyAH saMtòSaH paramaM sukhama || 3-2-44 ||

तस्मात संतॊषम एवेह धनं पश्यन्ति पण्डिताः अनित्यं यौवनं रूपं जीवितं दरव्यसंचयः ऐश्वर्यं परिय संवासॊ गृध्येद एषु न पण्डितः ।। ३-२-४५ ।।

'The wise remain perpetually content, recognizing that the thirst for wealth is insatiable. Contentment is the greatest happiness, which is why the wise consider it the highest pursuit.' ।। 3-2-45 ।।

tasmAta saMtòSama eveha dhanaM pazyanti paNDitAH anityaM yauvanaM rUpaM jIvitaM daravyasaMcayaH aizvaryaM pariya saMvAsò gRdhyeda eSu na paNDitaH || 3-2-45 ||
