[राजा] अनड्वाहौ सुव्रतौ साधु दान्ताव; एतद विप्राणां वाहनं वामदेव ताभ्यां याहि तवं यत्र कामॊ महर्षे; छन्दांसि वै तवादृशं संवहन्ति ।। ३-१९०-६१ ।।

sanskrit

'And hearing this, the king replied: 'O Vamadeva, this pair of excellent, well-trained, and docile bulls are indeed fit for Brahmanas. O great Rishi, take them and go wherever you wish. The very Vedas themselves are carried by persons like you.'' ।। 3-190-61 ।।

english translation

[rAjA] anaDvAhau suvratau sAdhu dAntAva; etada viprANAM vAhanaM vAmadeva tAbhyAM yAhi tavaM yatra kAmò maharSe; chandAMsi vai tavAdRzaM saMvahanti || 3-190-61 ||

[वाम] छन्दांसि वै मादृशं संवहन्ति; लॊके ऽमुष्मिन पार्थिव यानि सन्ति अस्मिंस तु लॊके मम यानम एतद; अस्मद्विधानाम अपरेषां च राजन ।। ३-१९०-६२ ।।

sanskrit

'Vamadeva said: "O king, indeed, the Vedas support those like us, but that is in the world beyond. In this world, however, O king, it is animals such as these that bear me and those like me, as well as all others."' ।। 3-190-62 ।।

english translation

[vAma] chandAMsi vai mAdRzaM saMvahanti; lòke 'muSmina pArthiva yAni santi asmiMsa tu lòke mama yAnama etada; asmadvidhAnAma apareSAM ca rAjana || 3-190-62 ||

[राजा] चत्वारॊ वा गर्दभास तवां वहन्तु; शरेष्ठाश्वतर्यॊ हरयॊ वा तुरंगाः तैस तवं याहि कषत्रियस्यैष वाहॊ; मम वाम्यौ न तवैतौ हि विद्धि ।। ३-१९०-६३ ।।

'The king replied: "Let four asses bear thee, or four mules of the finest breed, or even four steeds endowed with the swiftness of the wind. Go with these, O Brahmana. However, this pair of Vami horses is fit to be owned by Kshatriyas. Therefore, know that these horses are not for thee."' ।। 3-190-63 ।।

english translation

[rAjA] catvArò vA gardabhAsa tavAM vahantu; zareSThAzvataryò harayò vA turaMgAH taisa tavaM yAhi kaSatriyasyaiSa vAhò; mama vAmyau na tavaitau hi viddhi || 3-190-63 ||

[वाम] घॊरं वरतं बराह्मणस्यैतद आहुर; एतद राजन यद इहाजीवमानः अयस्मया घॊररूपा महान्तॊ; वहन्तु तवां शितशूलाश चतुर्धा ।। ३-१९०-६४ ।।

'Vamadeva said: "O king, terrible vows have been ordained for the Brahmanas. If I have lived by their observance, then let four fierce and mighty Rakshasas, with terrible forms and bodies of iron, commanded by me, pursue thee with a desire to slay. Let them carry thee on their sharp lances, having cleaved thy body into four parts."' ।। 3-190-64 ।।

english translation

[vAma] ghòraM varataM barAhmaNasyaitada Ahura; etada rAjana yada ihAjIvamAnaH ayasmayA ghòrarUpA mahAntò; vahantu tavAM zitazUlAza caturdhA || 3-190-64 ||

[राजा] ये तवा विदुर बराह्मणं वामदेव; वाचा हन्तुं मनसा कर्मणा वा ते तवां सशिष्यम इह पातयन्तु; मद्वाक्यनुन्नाः शितशूलासि हस्ताः ।। ३-१९०-६५ ।।

'Hearing this, the king said, "Let those who recognize thee, O Vamadeva, as a Brahmana—who, in thought, word, and deed, seek to take life—be struck down at my command. Armed with shining lances and swords, may they, along with thy disciples, fall prostrate before me."' ।। 3-190-65 ।।

[rAjA] ye tavA vidura barAhmaNaM vAmadeva; vAcA hantuM manasA karmaNA vA te tavAM saziSyama iha pAtayantu; madvAkyanunnAH zitazUlAsi hastAH || 3-190-65 ||
