हतो<पि दीप्ततेजा: स जीवन्निव हि दृश्यते । घातितस्य शिरांस्थाजौ जीवन्तीवाद्भुतानि वै ॥ ५-९-२६ ॥

Though
he
had
been
killed,
his
energy
blazed
forth,
as
if he
was
still
alive. And, his heads seemed to be alive as they were beheld lying low on the field.

hato<pi dIptatejA: sa jIvanniva hi dRzyate । ghAtitasya zirAMsthAjau jIvantIvAdbhutAni vai ॥ 5-9-26 ॥

ततो5तिभीततगात्रस्तु शक्र आस्ते विचारयन्‌ । अथाजगाम परशुं स्कन्धेनादाय वर्धकि: ॥ ५-९-२७ ॥

And exceedingly afraid of that lustre, Indra remained plunged in thought. And at that time, bearing an axe on his shoulder, a carpenter
had
arrived
there.

tato5tibhItatagAtrastu zakra Aste vicArayan‌ । athAjagAma parazuM skandhenAdAya vardhaki: ॥ 5-9-27 ॥

तदरण्यं महाराज यत्रास्तेडसौ निपातितः । स भीततस्तत्र तक्षाणं घटमानं शचीपति: ॥ ५-९-२८ ॥

O great king, he (that carpenter) came to the forest and approached the spot where lay that being. And Indra, the lord of Sachi, who was afraid -

tadaraNyaM mahArAja yatrAsteDasau nipAtitaH । sa bhItatastatra takSANaM ghaTamAnaM zacIpati: ॥ 5-9-28 ॥

अपश्यदब्रवीच्चैनं सत्वरं पाकशासन: । क्षिप्रं छिन्धि शिरांस्यस्य कुरुष्व वचनं मम ॥ ५-९-२९ ।।

- saw him (the carpenter) come there by chance. And the chastiser of Paka said unto him immediately, 'Do this my behest. Quickly cut off this one's heads.'

apazyadabravIccainaM satvaraM pAkazAsana: । kSipraM chindhi zirAMsyasya kuruSva vacanaM mama ॥ 5-9-29 ॥

महास्कन्धो भृशं होष परशुर्न भविष्यति । कर्तु चाहं न शक्ष्यामि कर्म सद्धिर्विगर्हितम्‌ ॥ ५-९-३० ॥

woodcutter
replied, ‘His
shoulders
are
extremely
broad
and
my
axe
will
not
be
able
to
cut
through.
Besides,
I
am
incapable
of
performing
a
deed
that
is
condemned
by
the
virtous.’

mahAskandho bhRzaM hoSa parazurna bhaviSyati । kartu cAhaM na zakSyAmi karma saddhirvigarhitam‌ ॥ 5-9-30 ॥
