Bhīṣma said: Then Śikhaṇḍinī’s mother, O king, related the matter according to the truth, O mighty-armed one, to her husband—(declaring) that Śikhaṇḍinī was a girl.
english translation
O king, I was without a son; out of fear of the co-wives, in this matter—though Śikhaṇḍinī was born a girl—she was indeed reported as a male.
english translation
And you yourself, O best of men, approved this with affection. Moreover, the rites and social functions proper to a son were performed for the girl, O bull among kings; and you, O king, arranged her marriage to the daughter of the lord of Daśārṇa.
english translation
And you had earlier declared—by discerning the meaning of a divine utterance—that, though born a daughter, the child would later become male; thus this matter was allowed to stand without objection.
english translation
Hearing this, Drupada Yajñasena disclosed the whole truth to those skilled in counsel and mantra; then the king deliberated, O lord, on whatever course was fitting for the protection of his people.
