Yudhiṣṭhira said: What war-seeking speech do you hear from me, Sañjaya, that you fear war? Non-war, dear one, is weightier than war; having obtained that, who would ever choose to fight, O charioteer?

english translation

Sañjaya, if a man’s resolve could be fulfilled without acting—whatever he might wish within his mind—then no one would undertake action. I know this well: apart from deliberate engagement in war, most undertakings are comparatively easier.

english translation

How could one who understands reality ever choose war? Who, as though cursed by fate, would opt for battle? Those who seek well-being, O Pārtha, undertake actions not deficient in dharma and beneficial as a public norm for the world.

english translation

Expecting happiness as the outcome of action, one pursues difficult means; yet in truth, action is burdensome. Seeking pleasure and wishing to inflict suffering on others, one who follows the senses under the compulsion of gratification harms his own body; driven by craving and fixation, he repeatedly reproduces suffering.

english translation

Just as a fire, when fed and blazing, grows stronger still, so too a person is not satisfied by gains of desire and wealth—like a fire intensified by clarified butter. Observe with us this vast accumulation of enjoyments belonging to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
