Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, a man of reflection, having duly honored the counsel spoken by Vidura, questioned the great-souled Sanatsujāta in private, wishing to know the highest understanding.

english translation

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: Sanatsujāta, when I hear this instruction of yours—that death does not exist—yet I also hear that gods and asuras practiced brahmacarya for the sake of deathlessness; which of these is true?

english translation

Sanatsujāta said: Some hold that deathlessness is attained through action, while others say that death does not exist. Listen as I explain, O king, so that you may not doubt this matter.

english translation

Both statements can be upheld in their respective domains of practice beginning with the kṣatriya way of life: the sages regard delusion as ‘death’. I declare heedlessness (pramāda) to be death, and constant non-heedlessness to be deathlessness.

english translation

Indeed, through heedlessness the asuras meet defeat; through non-heedlessness one becomes established in brahman-like being. Death does not consume creatures like a tiger; for its form is not directly apprehended.
