Bhīṣma said: A very great burden, vast like the ocean, has now been placed upon me—this martial undertaking for Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s son, long contemplated over many years.

english translation

At this moment that has arrived—intense and dread-inspiring—I have no need to foster division among our own. Therefore, son of a charioteer, you may remain alive.

english translation

For I will not, even today, exert my prowess—though aged—to cut down, in battle, the martial confidence of you who are like a child, and thereby end your life, O son of a charioteer.

english translation

When Rāma Jāmadagnya unleashed great celestial weapons, I felt no distress at all; what, then, will you do to me?

english translation

The virtuous never commend the self-praise of one’s own strength. Yet, provoked and burning within, I will speak to you—O base one, the dust of your lineage.
