The mother said: A king should never display fear in any crisis. Even if he is inwardly shaken, he should not conduct himself as one who is shaken.
english translation
For when they see a king shaken, everything else is shaken as well: the realm, the armed forces, and the ministers—each splits off his judgment and acts independently.
english translation
Some submit to enemies; others abandon their allegiance. Still others seek to seize advantage—especially those who were previously slighted.
english translation
Those who are his most intimate well-wishers attend upon him. Though themselves without power, longing for his welfare—like cows bound to their calves—they grieve when he grieves, as though their own kinsmen were already lost.
english translation
Even those once honored by you and counted as friends—when, as the king falls into adversity, they begin to treat the realm as their own—do not let such ‘friends’ tear you down, nor let them mock you when you are weakened.
