One who is not oriented toward the highest good (śreyas) does not become a master of disciplined effort; nor does he truly listen to the voice of instruction. He does not cultivate the “fragrance” of virtuous company, nor does he apply practices that lead to the good.
english translation
One who is not oriented toward śreyas does not wear the proper coverings of righteous conduct; how, then, could he drive us away or restrain us among the Kurus? Rather, this craving should be cast off here itself, for it torments the heart within the body.
english translation
If the king himself stands in an unjust position yet seeks equilibrium from others, that is not proper. As he views his own conduct, so he comes to view (and treat) the conduct of others as well.
english translation
Abandoning a nearby fire in the heat of summer and going into a deep, dense thicket, one may later grieve—like an old person at the mercy of the wind—when seeking safety after the cold season has passed.
english translation
Sañjaya, for what reason does King Dhṛtarāṣṭra—who has attained sovereignty—now speak in a plaintive manner, while supporting a son of poor judgment, devoted to dishonesty, sluggish, confused, and lacking in counsel?
