सैवं शापपरित्रस्ता बहु चिन्तयती तदा मॊहेनाभिपरीताङ्गी समयमाना पुनः पुनः ॥ ३-२९१-६ ॥

'Vaiśampāyana continued: "Torn by the fear of a curse and lost in anxious thought, she fell into a state of utter bewilderment. Overcome by confusion, her senses forsook her, and she could no longer decide what course to take."' ॥ 3-291-6 ॥

saivaM zApaparitrastA bahu cintayatI tadA mòhenAbhiparItAGgI samayamAnA punaH punaH ॥ 3-291-6 ॥

तं देवम अब्रवीद भीता बन्धूनां राजसत्तम वरीडा विह्वलया वाचा शापत्रस्ता विशां पते ॥ ३-२९१-७ ॥

'Torn, O king, between the fear of reproach from her kin if she yielded to the deity, and the dread of a curse if she defied him, the maiden at last, her voice trembling with modesty, spoke these words to that god, O foremost of kings.' ॥ 3-291-7 ॥

taM devama abravIda bhItA bandhUnAM rAjasattama varIDA vihvalayA vAcA zApatrastA vizAM pate ॥ 3-291-7 ॥

[कुन्ती] पिता मे धरियते देव माता चान्ये च बान्धवाः न तेषु धरियमाणेषु विधिलॊपॊ भवेद अयम ॥ ३-२९१-८ ॥

'O god, since my father, mother, and kinsmen are still living, such a breach of duty should not occur through me. If I commit this unlawful act with thee, the honor of my lineage will be tarnished in this world on my account.' ॥ 3-291-8 ॥

[kuntI] pitA me dhariyate deva mAtA cAnye ca bAndhavAH na teSu dhariyamANeSu vidhilòpò bhaveda ayama ॥ 3-291-8 ॥

तवया मे संगमॊ देवयदि सयाद विधिवर्जितः मन्निमित्तं कुलस्यास्य लॊके कीर्तिर नशेत ततः ॥ ३-२९१-९ ॥

'O lord, if our union occurs without the sanction of proper rites, then because of me, the reputation of this noble line will be ruined in the world.' ॥ 3-291-9 ॥

tavayA me saMgamò devayadi sayAda vidhivarjitaH mannimittaM kulasyAsya lòke kIrtira nazeta tataH ॥ 3-291-9 ॥

अथ वा धर्मम एतं तवं मन्यसे तपसां वर ऋते परदानाद बन्धुभ्यस तव कामं करॊम्य अहम ॥ ३-२९१-१० ॥

'Yet, O foremost among the radiant ones, if thou deem this act to be righteous, then—even without being formally given to thee by my relatives—I shall fulfill thy desire.' ॥ 3-291-10 ॥
