'And beholding them all, the girl grew afraid, her face flushed with the blush of shame. Then, with trembling voice, she addressed Surya, saying: 'O lord of rays, return to thy own celestial abode. Because I am still a maiden, this advance of thine brings me only sorrow.'' ॥ 3-290-21 ॥

'It is only a girl’s father, mother, and other elders who have the right to bestow her in marriage. As for me, I shall never abandon virtue — for in this world, the protection of one’s person is regarded as the highest duty of women, and is held in utmost honour.' ॥ 3-290-22 ॥

'O thou radiant one, endowed with wealth of splendour, it was only to test the power of my mantras that I summoned thee — and that too, out of mere childishness. Since this was done by a girl of tender years, it beseems thee, O lord, to forgive her!' ॥ 3-290-23 ॥

'Then Surya said: "It is only because I see you as a mere girl, O Kunti, that I speak to you with such gentleness. To one who is not so, I would not grant this favor. Therefore, O Kunti, yield yourself to me — for in doing so, you shall surely find peace and happiness."' ॥ 3-290-24 ॥

'Since, O timid maiden, thou hast invoked me with sacred mantras, it is not proper for me to return without fulfilling their purpose. Should I depart thus, O thou of faultless limbs, I would become a subject of ridicule in the world, a mere byword among all the celestials, O beauteous damsel.' ॥ 3-290-25 ॥
