[य] उक्तं भगवता जन्म रामादीनां पृथक पृथक परस्थान कारणं बरह्मञ शरॊतुम इच्छामि कथ्यताम ॥ ३-२६१-१ ॥
'Yudhishthira said, 'O venerable one, you have narrated to me in detail the history of the births of Rama and the others. Now, I wish to learn the cause of their exile.'' ॥ 3-261-1 ॥
english translation
[ya] uktaM bhagavatA janma rAmAdInAM pRthaka pRthaka parasthAna kAraNaM barahmaJa zaròtuma icchAmi kathyatAma ॥ 3-261-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकथं दाशरथीं वीरौ भरातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ परस्थापितौ वनं बरह्म मैथिली च यशस्विनी ॥ ३-२६१-२ ॥
'Please, O Brahmana, explain why the sons of Dasharatha—Rama and Lakshmana—went to the forest along with the renowned princess of Mithila.' ॥ 3-261-2 ॥
english translation
kathaM dAzarathIM vIrau bharAtarau rAmalakSmaNau parasthApitau vanaM barahma maithilI ca yazasvinI ॥ 3-261-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscript[मार्क] जातपुत्रॊ दशरथः परीतिमान अभवन नृपः करिया रतिर धर्मपरः सततं वृद्धसेविता ॥ ३-२६१-३ ॥
'Markandeya said, "The righteous king Dasharatha, always attentive to the elderly and devoted to religious duties, was overjoyed when his sons were born."' ॥ 3-261-3 ॥
english translation
[mArka] jAtaputrò dazarathaH parItimAna abhavana nRpaH kariyA ratira dharmaparaH satataM vRddhasevitA ॥ 3-261-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकरमेण चास्य ते पुत्रा वयवर्धन्त महौजसः वेदेषु सहरस्येषु धनुर्वेदे च पारगाः ॥ ३-२६१-४ ॥
'As they grew, they became mighty and well-versed in the Vedas and all their mysteries, as well as in the science of arms.' ॥ 3-261-4 ॥
english translation
karameNa cAsya te putrA vayavardhanta mahaujasaH vedeSu saharasyeSu dhanurvede ca pAragAH ॥ 3-261-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptचरितब्रह्मचर्यास ते कृतदाराश च पार्थिव यदा तदा दशरथः परीतिमान अभवत सुखी ॥ ३-२६१-५ ॥
'And when the princes, having completed their Brahmacharya vows, were married, King Dasharatha became overjoyed and greatly pleased.' ॥ 3-261-5 ॥

caritabrahmacaryAsa te kRtadArAza ca pArthiva yadA tadA dazarathaH parItimAna abhavata sukhI ॥ 3-261-5 ॥
