अथॊत्क्रुष्टं महेष्वासैर धार्तराष्ट्रैर महारथैः परतिज्ञाते फल्गुनस्य वधे कर्णेन संयुगे विजितांश चाप्य अमन्यन्त पाण्डवान धृतराष्ट्रजाः ॥ ३-२४३-१६ ॥

sanskrit

'And I shall observe the Asura vow; and whenever anyone may ask anything of me, I shall never say, 'I do not have it.' Having thus vowed to slay Phalguna in battle, Karna, the mighty warrior, was cheered loudly by the great chariot-warriors and bowmen, the sons of Dhritarashtra. The sons of Dhritarashtra, thinking the Pandavas had already been defeated, rejoiced greatly.' ॥ 3-243-16 ॥

'Then, that chief of kings, the graceful Duryodhana, leaving those bulls among men, entered his apartment, like the lord Kuvera entering the garden of Chitraratha. And all those mighty bowmen, O Bharata, went to their respective quarters.' ॥ 3-243-17 ॥

'Meanwhile, those mighty bowmen, the Pandavas, stirred by the words of the messenger, became filled with anxiety, and from that moment, they experienced no happiness whatsoever.' ॥ 3-243-18 ॥

'Hearing this, O lord of men, the son of Dharma became deeply anxious. Reflecting on Karna, whose impenetrable armor marked him as a warrior of extraordinary prowess, and recalling the many hardships they had faced, he found no peace.' ॥ 3-243-20 ॥

etaca charutvA dharmasutaH samudvignò narAdhipa abhedyakavacaM matvA karNama adbhutavikramama anusmaraMza ca saMklezAna na zAntima upayAti saH ॥ 3-243-20 ॥
