अथॊत्क्रुष्टं महेष्वासैर धार्तराष्ट्रैर महारथैः परतिज्ञाते फल्गुनस्य वधे कर्णेन संयुगे विजितांश चाप्य अमन्यन्त पाण्डवान धृतराष्ट्रजाः ॥ ३-२४३-१६ ॥
'And I shall observe the Asura vow; and whenever anyone may ask anything of me, I shall never say, 'I do not have it.' Having thus vowed to slay Phalguna in battle, Karna, the mighty warrior, was cheered loudly by the great chariot-warriors and bowmen, the sons of Dhritarashtra. The sons of Dhritarashtra, thinking the Pandavas had already been defeated, rejoiced greatly.' ॥ 3-243-16 ॥

athòtkruSTaM maheSvAsaira dhArtarASTraira mahArathaiH paratijJAte phalgunasya vadhe karNena saMyuge vijitAMza cApya amanyanta pANDavAna dhRtarASTrajAH ॥ 3-243-16 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptदुर्यॊधनॊ ऽपि राजेन्द्र विसृज्य नरपुंगवान परविवेश गृहं शरीमान यथा चैत्ररथं परभुः ते ऽपि सर्वे महेष्वासा जग्मुर वेश्मानि भारत ॥ ३-२४३-१७ ॥
'Then, that chief of kings, the graceful Duryodhana, leaving those bulls among men, entered his apartment, like the lord Kuvera entering the garden of Chitraratha. And all those mighty bowmen, O Bharata, went to their respective quarters.' ॥ 3-243-17 ॥

duryòdhanò 'pi rAjendra visRjya narapuMgavAna paraviveza gRhaM zarImAna yathA caitrarathaM parabhuH te 'pi sarve maheSvAsA jagmura vezmAni bhArata ॥ 3-243-17 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपाण्डवाश च महेष्वासा दूतवाक्यप्रचॊदिताः चिन्तयन्तस तम एवाथं नालभन्त सुखं कव चित ॥ ३-२४३-१८ ॥
'Meanwhile, those mighty bowmen, the Pandavas, stirred by the words of the messenger, became filled with anxiety, and from that moment, they experienced no happiness whatsoever.' ॥ 3-243-18 ॥

pANDavAza ca maheSvAsA dUtavAkyapracòditAH cintayantasa tama evAthaM nAlabhanta sukhaM kava cita ॥ 3-243-18 ॥

'Further, O foremost of kings, intelligence had been gathered by spies regarding the vow of the Suta's son to slay Vijaya.' ॥ 3-243-19 ॥

bhUyò ca cArai rAjendra paravRttira upapAditA paratijJA sUtaputrasya vijayasya vadhaM parati ॥ 3-243-19 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptएतच छरुत्वा धर्मसुतः समुद्विग्नॊ नराधिप अभेद्यकवचं मत्वा कर्णम अद्भुतविक्रमम अनुस्मरंश च संक्लेशान न शान्तिम उपयाति सः ॥ ३-२४३-२० ॥
'Hearing this, O lord of men, the son of Dharma became deeply anxious. Reflecting on Karna, whose impenetrable armor marked him as a warrior of extraordinary prowess, and recalling the many hardships they had faced, he found no peace.' ॥ 3-243-20 ॥

etaca charutvA dharmasutaH samudvignò narAdhipa abhedyakavacaM matvA karNama adbhutavikramama anusmaraMza ca saMklezAna na zAntima upayAti saH ॥ 3-243-20 ॥
