अथॊत्क्रुष्टं महेष्वासैर धार्तराष्ट्रैर महारथैः परतिज्ञाते फल्गुनस्य वधे कर्णेन संयुगे विजितांश चाप्य अमन्यन्त पाण्डवान धृतराष्ट्रजाः ॥ ३-२४३-१६ ॥

'And I shall observe the Asura vow; and whenever anyone may ask anything of me, I shall never say, 'I do not have it.' Having thus vowed to slay Phalguna in battle, Karna, the mighty warrior, was cheered loudly by the great chariot-warriors and bowmen, the sons of Dhritarashtra. The sons of Dhritarashtra, thinking the Pandavas had already been defeated, rejoiced greatly.' ॥ 3-243-16 ॥
