न मृतॊ जयते शत्रूञ जीवन भद्राणि पश्यति मृतस्य भद्राणि कुतः कौरवेय कुतॊ जयः न कालॊ ऽदय विषादस्य भयस्य मरणस्य वा ॥ ३-२४०-३६ ॥
'No dead man conquers his foes; it is only while alive that he witnesses his prosperity. What good is there for the dead, and, O Kauraveya, where is his victory? Therefore, this is no time for grief, fear, or thoughts of death.' ॥ 3-240-36 ॥

परिष्वज्याब्रवीच चैनं भुजाभ्यां स महाभुजः उत्तिष्ठ राजन किं शेषे कस्माच छॊचसि शत्रुहन शत्रून परताप्य वीर्येण स कथं मर्तुम इच्छसि ॥ ३-२४०-३७ ॥
'And, having embraced that mighty-armed one with his own powerful arms, he continued, 'Arise, O king! Why dost thou lie down? Why dost thou grieve, O slayer of foes? Having vanquished thy enemies with thy valor, why dost thou seek death?'' ॥ 3-240-37 ॥

अथ वा ते भयं जातं दृष्ट्वार्जुन पराक्रमम सत्यं ते परतिजानामि वधिष्यामि रणे ऽरजुनम ॥ ३-२४०-३८ ॥
'Or perhaps fear hath overtaken thee at the sight of Arjuna's prowess. I truly pledge to thee that I shall slay Arjuna in battle.' ॥ 3-240-38 ॥

गते तरयॊदशे वर्षे सत्येनायुधम आलभे आनयिष्याम्य अहं पार्थान वशं तव जनाधिप ॥ ३-२४०-३९ ॥
'O lord of men, I swear by my weapon that after the lapse of thirteen years, I shall bring the sons of Pritha under thy subjection.' ॥ 3-240-39 ॥

एवम उक्तस तु कर्णेन दैत्यानां वचनात तथा परणिपातेन चान्येषाम उदतिष्ठत सुयॊधनः दैत्यानां तद वचॊ शरुत्वा हृदि कृत्वा सथिरां मतिम ॥ ३-२४०-४० ॥
'Thus, having spoken, Karṇa's words echoed in Suyodhana’s mind, along with the counsel of the Daityas and the entreaties of his brothers. Rising to his feet, that tiger among men, resolute in his heart, began assembling his army.' ॥ 3-240-40 ॥
