कृशांश च वातातपकर्शिताङ्गान; दुःखस्य चॊग्रस्य मुखे परपन्नान तां चाप्य अनाथाम इव वीर नाथां; कृष्णां परिक्लेश गुणेन युक्ताम ।। ३-२२५-६ ।।

sanskrit

'Emaciated and worn by the wind and sun, and subjected to intense suffering, they appeared as if fallen into the mouth of misery. Even Krishna, the lord of the brave, appeared afflicted, as if an orphan, filled with distress, and endowed with the qualities of hardship.' ।। 3-225-6 ।।

english translation

kRzAMza ca vAtAtapakarzitAGgAna; duHkhasya cògrasya mukhe parapannAna tAM cApya anAthAma iva vIra nAthAM; kRSNAM parikleza guNena yuktAma || 3-225-6 ||

hk transliteration

ततः कथां तस्य निशम्य राजा; वैचित्रवीर्यः कृपयाभितप्तः वने सथितान पार्थिव पुत्रपौत्राञ; शरुत्वा तदा दुःखनदीं परपन्नान ।। ३-२२५-७ ।।

sanskrit

'Upon hearing the Brahmana’s words, the royal son of Vichitravirya was struck with deep sorrow, grieving for the princes of royal lineage who were then drowning in a river of sorrow.' ।। 3-225-7 ।।

english translation

tataH kathAM tasya nizamya rAjA; vaicitravIryaH kRpayAbhitaptaH vane sathitAna pArthiva putrapautrAJa; zarutvA tadA duHkhanadIM parapannAna || 3-225-7 ||

परॊवाच दैत्याभिहतान्तर आत्मा; निःश्वासबास्पॊपहतः स पार्थान वाचं कथं चित सथिरताम उपेत्य; तत सर्वम आत्मप्रभवं विचिन्त्य ।। ३-२२५-८ ।।

sanskrit

'His soul deeply afflicted with sorrow and his body trembling with sighs, the king made a great effort to calm himself, remembering that all these misfortunes had arisen from his own actions.' ।। 3-225-8 ।।

english translation

paròvAca daityAbhihatAntara AtmA; niHzvAsabAspòpahataH sa pArthAna vAcaM kathaM cita sathiratAma upetya; tata sarvama AtmaprabhavaM vicintya || 3-225-8 ||

कथं नु सत्यः शुचिर आर्य वृत्तॊ; जयेष्ठः सुतानां मम धर्मराजः अजातशत्रुः पृथिवीतलस्थः; शेते पुरा राङ्कव कूटशायी ।। ३-२२५-९ ।।

sanskrit

'The monarch then said, 'Alas, how is it that Yudhishthira, the eldest of my sons, who is truthful, pious, and virtuous, who has no enemy, and who once slept on soft Ranku skin beds, now sleeps on the bare ground!'' ।। 3-225-9 ।।

english translation

kathaM nu satyaH zucira Arya vRttò; jayeSThaH sutAnAM mama dharmarAjaH ajAtazatruH pRthivItalasthaH; zete purA rAGkava kUTazAyI || 3-225-9 ||

परबॊद्यते मागध सूत पूगैर; नित्यं सतुवद्भिः सवयम इन्द्रकल्पः पतत्रिसंघैः स जघन्यरात्रे; परबॊध्यते नूनम इडा तलस्थः ।। ३-२२५-१० ।।

sanskrit

'Alas, once awakened every morning by the praises of the Sutas, Magadhas, and other singers, melodiously recited in his honor, that prince of the Kuru race, equal to Indra himself, is now roused from the bare ground in the small hours of the night by a multitude of birds!' ।। 3-225-10 ।।

english translation

parabòdyate mAgadha sUta pUgaira; nityaM satuvadbhiH savayama indrakalpaH patatrisaMghaiH sa jaghanyarAtre; parabòdhyate nUnama iDA talasthaH || 3-225-10 ||
