[जनम] एवं वने वर्तमाना नराग्र्याः; शीतॊष्णवातातप कर्शिताङ्गाः सरस तद आसाद्य वनं च पुण्यं; ततः परं किम अकुर्वन्त पार्थाः ।। ३-२२५-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Janamejaya said, "While those foremost of men—the sons of Pritha—were enduring the hardships of winter, summer, wind, and sun in the forest, what did they do, O Brahmana, after they arrived at the sacred lake and forest known as Dwaita?"' ।। 3-225-1 ।।

english translation

[janama] evaM vane vartamAnA narAgryAH; zItòSNavAtAtapa karzitAGgAH sarasa tada AsAdya vanaM ca puNyaM; tataH paraM kima akurvanta pArthAH || 3-225-1 ||

hk transliteration

[वै] सरस तद आसाद्य तु पाण्डुपुत्रा; जनं समुत्सृज्य विधाय चैषाम वनानि रम्याण्य अथ पर्वतांश च; नदी परदेशांश च तदा विचेरुः ।। ३-२२५-२ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana said, "After the sons of Pandu arrived at that lake, they selected a dwelling place far from human habitation. They then began to wander through the enchanting forests, ever-beautiful mountains, and picturesque river valleys."' ।। 3-225-2 ।।

english translation

[vai] sarasa tada AsAdya tu pANDuputrA; janaM samutsRjya vidhAya caiSAma vanAni ramyANya atha parvatAMza ca; nadI paradezAMza ca tadA viceruH || 3-225-2 ||

hk transliteration

तथा वने तान वसतः परवीरान; सवाध्यायवन्तश च तपॊधनाश च अभ्याययुर वेद विदः पुराणास; तान पूजयाम आसुर अथॊ नराग्र्याः ।। ३-२२५-३ ।।

sanskrit

'And after they had settled there, many venerable ascetics, endowed with Vedic knowledge, frequently visited them. The foremost of men always received those Veda-knowing Rishis with great respect.' ।। 3-225-3 ।।

english translation

tathA vane tAna vasataH paravIrAna; savAdhyAyavantaza ca tapòdhanAza ca abhyAyayura veda vidaH purANAsa; tAna pUjayAma Asura athò narAgryAH || 3-225-3 ||

hk transliteration

ततः कदा चित कुशलः कथासु; विप्रॊ ऽभयगच्छद भुवि कौरवेयान स तैः समेत्याथ यदृच्छयैव; वैचित्रवीर्यं नृपम अभ्यगच्छत ।। ३-२२५-४ ।।

sanskrit

'And one day, a certain Brahmana, renowned on earth for his eloquence, came to the Kaurava princes. After conversing with the Pandavas for a while, the Brahmana, content with the encounter, departed at his own will to the court of the royal son of Vichitravirya.' ।। 3-225-4 ।।

english translation

tataH kadA cita kuzalaH kathAsu; viprò 'bhayagacchada bhuvi kauraveyAna sa taiH sametyAtha yadRcchayaiva; vaicitravIryaM nRpama abhyagacchata || 3-225-4 ||

hk transliteration

अथॊपविष्टः परतिसत्कृतश च; वृद्धेन राज्ञा कुरुसत्तमेन परचॊदितः सन कथयां बभूव; धर्मानिलेन्द्र परभवान यमौ च ।। ३-२२५-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Received with respect by the chief of the Kurus, the aged king, the Brahmana took his seat. When asked by the monarch, he began to speak of the sons of Dharma, Pavana, Indra.' ।। 3-225-5 ।।

english translation

athòpaviSTaH paratisatkRtaza ca; vRddhena rAjJA kurusattamena paracòditaH sana kathayAM babhUva; dharmAnilendra parabhavAna yamau ca || 3-225-5 ||
