[वै] ततः स पुनर एवाथ मार्कण्डेयं यशस्विनम पप्रच्छ विनयॊपेतॊ धर्मराजॊ युधिष्ठिरः ।। ३-१८६-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Then, with great humility, King Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, once again inquired of the illustrious Markandeya.' ।। 3-186-1 ।।

english translation

[vai] tataH sa punara evAtha mArkaNDeyaM yazasvinama papraccha vinayòpetò dharmarAjò yudhiSThiraH || 3-186-1 ||

hk transliteration

नैके युगसहस्रान्तास तवया दृष्टा महामुने न चापीह समः कश चिद आयुषा तव विद्यते वर्जयित्वा महात्मानं बराह्मणं परमेष्ठिनम ।। ३-१८६-२ ।।

sanskrit

'O great Muni, thou hast witnessed the passage of countless thousands of ages. In this world, there is none as long-lived as thou! O best of those who have attained knowledge of the Supreme Spirit, none equals thee in years, save the great-minded Brahma, the Eternal, residing in the highest realm.' ।। 3-186-2 ।।

english translation

naike yugasahasrAntAsa tavayA dRSTA mahAmune na cApIha samaH kaza cida AyuSA tava vidyate varjayitvA mahAtmAnaM barAhmaNaM parameSThinama || 3-186-2 ||

hk transliteration

अनन्तरिक्षे लॊके ऽसमिन देवदानव वर्जिते तवम एव परलये विप्र बराह्मणम उपतिष्ठसि ।। ३-१८६-३ ।।

sanskrit

'O Brahmana, thou worshippest Brahma at the time of the great dissolution, when this world is devoid of sky, gods, and Danavas.' ।। 3-186-3 ।।

english translation

anantarikSe lòke 'samina devadAnava varjite tavama eva paralaye vipra barAhmaNama upatiSThasi || 3-186-3 ||

hk transliteration

परलये चापि निर्वृत्ते परबुद्धे च पितामहे तवम एव सृज्यमानानि भूतानीह परपश्यसि ।। ३-१८६-४ ।।

sanskrit

'Even after the great dissolution (pralaya) and when the Creator (Pitamaha/Brahma) awakens again, you alone witness all the beings being created here.' ।। 3-186-4 ।।

english translation

paralaye cApi nirvRtte parabuddhe ca pitAmahe tavama eva sRjyamAnAni bhUtAnIha parapazyasi || 3-186-4 ||

hk transliteration

चतुर्विधानि विप्रर्षे यथावत परमेष्ठिना वायुभूता दिशः कृत्वा विक्षिप्यापस ततस ततः ।। ३-१८६-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Thou dost behold Brahma, after filling the cardinal directions with air and restoring the waters to their proper place, re-creating the four orders of beings in due course.' ।। 3-186-5 ।।

caturvidhAni viprarSe yathAvata parameSThinA vAyubhUtA dizaH kRtvA vikSipyApasa tatasa tataH || 3-186-5 ||
